Abstract:

North Carolina's banks are ranked by their 2001 revenues. Bank of America and Wachovia repeated their first and second place rankings from 2001. For the first time the ranking of the state's largest financial institutions included credit unions. Most of the 70 credit unions are ranked near the bottom, but two Raleigh-based ones, the State Employees Credit Union and the Coastal Federal Credit Union, are ranked 5th and 9th respectively.

Abstract:

When African-American residents in Chatham and Lee Counties encountered difficulty in securing credit and other financial services, Bishop Leach and several others founded the Chatham-Lee Credit Union. Leach managed it from a backyard building for forty years. When he died in 1997, he son, Jimmy Leach, took over the day-to-day operations. The credit union, now with $2.81 million in assets, was awarded an INDEPENDENT 1998 Citizen Award.

"A $4 billion N.C. credit union makes a break from its past, testing the transition skills of leadership." In 1983, State Employees Credit Union leaders formed Local Government Federal Credit Union under a federal charter, side-stepping a North Carolina Supreme Court ruling regarding membership in SECU. Dwayne Naylor took over Local Government in 2023. Naylor helped create Local government's affiliate, Civic Federal Credit Union in 2018. On June 3 of this year, Local Government will end its close relationship with SECU and reform under the Civic Federal Credit Union brand,
