Summer camp has been redefined in the North Carolina towns of Asheville, Greensboro, and Durham through Queer Oriented Radical Days of Summer. A response to the Same Sex Marriage Amendment passed in 2012, offers a place for creative expression and community building for queer and trans youth. Activities include Safe Sex and Consent and music lessons, as well as traditional summer camp activities like canoeing and nature walks.

While there is extensive intensive interest in the arts in Charlotte, the many fundraising efforts are often in competition for limited funds. Working at cross purposes, different organizations undermine each other. What is really needed is a good, financially stable foundation that the arts can rely on.

Victor Ekpuk's new mural at the North Carolina Museum of Art was commissioned to augment the museum’s expanded African art gallery. Rendered in white chalk on a black wall, Ekpuk's symbolic composition forms an abstracted figure wrapping long arms around the perimeter. The mural’s meaning reflects the current social-political climate in America, but can be interpreted several ways.

A creative endeavor Charlotte’s gallery and museum communities activated and Jessica Moss advocated was Roll Up. This project, taking artists out into impoverished and vulnerable parts of town, included underrepresented human subjects in its artwork. This exhibition of public art by forty individuals from across North America and Europe will be on display in the Contemporary Gallery this summer and fall. The artistic media includes video, photography, posters, placards, type, logos, diagrams, and other forms. The purpose of theism works is to critique the way that traditional art functions in our society and to reveal the myths, ideals, and realities that form our opinions and control us as individuals.
