This article follows the career of Josiah Martin, the last royal governor of North Carolina. Plagued by financial insecurity for much of his life, Martin bought his way into public service in the colonies with assistance from influential friends. His governorship provided him the financial security he always craved.

In protest to the British Crown and Parliament’s taxing tea, the colonial dames of Wilmington burnt their tea. The Wilmington Tea Party was a demonstration procession that occurred in early April, 1775, months after women in Edenton held their protest.

Josiah Martin, North Carolina’s last royal governor, inherited a number of problems when he was appointed in 1771. Governor Martin had an inflexible loyalty to the crown, and was ultimately hampered by his instructions from Lord Hillsborough and Lord Dartmouth.
