Abstract:
In the early years of 1800 Captain Samuel Pointer, a Virginian, entertained a traveling merchant from India. This stranger expressed his gratitude with a parting gift to Captain Pointer. Now this celebrated \"India Madstone\" is again changing hands; the only surviving daughter of Captain Pointer is giving this family relic to the medical department of the University of North Carolina.

Abstract:
Flat River Primitive Baptist Church near Roxboro in Person County is one of the oldest churches in North Carolina as it has been in steady use for almost two centuries. Built around 1753, the church contains a fireplace and shed where slaves could hear the gospel. The church has also served as a meeting house, and church records have kept up with generations of attendance.
