Tax incentives for historic rehabilitation can promote central-city economic development around legacy sites that would otherwise go neglected under inexorable and institutionalized suburbanization. North Carolina has had some success with it historic rehabilitation tax credit but can still improve the program.

Terms such as False-Self syndrome, Zealous Advocacy, Always the Helper, and Ignoring Boundaries were applied to lawyers. Being especially vulnerable to depression and suicide, attorneys were cautioned to maintain boundaries between one’s professional and personal life, being true to oneself, and not overextending oneself physically and emotionally.

A companion article to Christa Capua’s “Medication Assisted Treatment for Opioid Dependence in the Criminal Justice System,” Moraites’ article focuses on the instances when Medication Assisted Treatment is not the best solution for those seeking recovery. Included in Moraites’ counter argument is an examination of the true efficacy of this type of treatment and in what situations is Medication Assisted Treatment the best treatment solution.

The buzz in this case was the correlation between attorneys, mental health issues, and alcoholism. A recent study noted by Moraites revealed what has been known within the legal profession for decades: lawyers have a greater disposition to mental health issues such as depression, and substance abuse issues such as alcoholism, than the general population. Points addressed further by the author included statistical data that revealed younger lawyers are more at risk and barriers to recovery particular to attorneys. Countering the sobering statistics and findings was information about the Lawyer Assistance Programs such as NC LAP, of which Moraites serves as the director.

Abstract:
Budget cuts at the Office of Indigent Services (IDS), has created many problems in the North Carolina legal system, including the inability to pay lawyers. Such cuts and delayed payments often have mental health consequences for both young and long-time lawyers. The Lawyer Assistance Program helps these individuals get back on their feet.

Abstract:
Clarifying the confusion between BarCARES and NC LAP were the authors’ descriptions of these organizations for legal community members experiencing mental health and/or substance abuse issues. The authors’ clarification was provided within the context of services, resources, and whom within the legal community each organization serves. In defining their uniqueness, Barnhardt and Moraites also emphasized the common goal of BarCARES and NC LAP, whether working together or independently . It is assisting representatives of the legal community in maintaining their professional and personal well-being.
