In the third quarter of 1957, insured employment reached a new high, moving upward from over 829,000 to over 857,000. Although seasonal trends are present, employment levels have been higher since 1956 when insurance covered was lowered from coverage of eight to four or more workers per business. Employment increases were seen in all industry groups except service, and gross wages were up 5 percent of those in 1956.

The Committee on Improving and Expediting the Administration of Justice in North Carolina presented a survey of the state's judicial system to the North Carolina Bar Association. In a program designed to improve North Carolina's courts in order to meet the changing needs of the state, amendments to the state constitution aim to unify the system, face issues with justice of the peace, jury selection, and the addition of courts and judges.

As a leader in the textile industry, North Carolina is facing the problems that the entire American textile industry is currently experiencing. Despite rapid progress due to research, financial and management leadership, and sound merchandising and sales, the textile industry is being stunted by American legislation. Governmental policies are allowing foreign competitors the advantage rather than giving the American textile industry a chance to compete in the global market.

King Cotton may make a comeback in the Chowan County area, with the help of a cooperative insect control program organized by the county’s farmers. Cotton crops declined due to lack of manpower to harvest it and low profits, but Chowan’s soil is more suitable to cotton than to some of the other crops in the county.

The Tadmore Drainage Dike in Newland Township, about twenty miles west of Elizabeth City, has saved farmers in the area millions of dollars since its construction in 1956. After heavy rains the farmers partially close the floodgates permitting most of the water to run alongside the dike and flow into the Pasquotank River. Before the dike, the low-lying area would become extremely flooded and devastate crops.

The Department’s broad inspection powers, laws and regulations are meant to protect consumers, and to ensure safe and quality products. Inspections include all items of food or drink for man or animals, as well as gasoline and oil.

The Webb Memorial was built in memory of Earle Webb Jr. and Eva Webb in 1933 as a civic center for community programs. The Morehead City Women’s Club, which was meeting in a local church at the time, were given the memorial as a meeting space as the Webb family was involved with the club.
