Tom Kearney started a part-time job at WPTF in Raleigh in 1982 and in 1988 he had his own show, broadcasting weekly between 9 and 10 pm. His is a measured and soothing voice among a host of vitriolic broadcasters. He has a loyal audience, and his shows cover a range of topics like drive-in-restaurants and old movies, as well as guests including a pharmacist, economist, stamp-and-coin expert, and state government officials.

Durham native Caroline Vaughan is a photographer with a national reputation. She is recognized for capturing the small and ordinary moments and was named on the 43 undiscovered masters of photography in 1977. Her work is held in collections by major museums in North America. Vaughan works during the week as a researcher at the Duke Development Office and spends her free time pursuing photography. Vaughan discusses the importance of time and patience to her work and in her life.

The North Carolina Arts Council is working with schools and community groups to connect art, science and the environment. Artists are also conducting workshops for teachers in rural areas to develop curriculum that incorporates hands-on arts and new methods of teaching.

The author gives the lives of Horace Sowers Kephart and his photographer friend, George Mesa, who did much to preserve the natural beauty of the NC Mountains, which led to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The other Horace, is W. Horace Carter, a small town newspaper publisher in Tabor City, NC, who used his newspaper to push back against KKK violence.

Started as a writers and artists’ summer resort by author Thomas Dixon, it started to come full circle, purpose wise, through its purchase during the Depression by Charlotte’s Blumenthal family. Initially a religious retreat site, Wildacres serves as a haven for musicians, who offer free concerts open to the local community.
