"If ever the marque of a performance venue could capture the contradictory, heat-struck culture of 1970s Charlotte, this was surely it; This photo has become a piece of Charlotte iconography: four acts that don't seem to belong in the same galaxy, much less the same arena. But they all fit into the old Charlotte Coliseum, and they left a lot of stories behind, even if Billy Graham never got a chance to wrestle Elvis." "The historic Carolina Theatre, which (finally) reopened this year after 47 years, stands as a testament to good neighbors, good luck, and a dedicated group that refused to watch the curtains close." First opening its doors in 1927, the theatre was the first air-conditioned Charlotte building openned to the public. the building was fitted for sound in 1938, to play talking motion pictures. It also served the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and numerous live performances, including Katherine Hepburn, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope and Andy Griffith.

"In and around Franklin and other parts of western North Carolina, gem mines draw tourists and serious rock hounds alike for the chance of spotting a deep purple sapphire or rich red ruby sparkling in sifting trays full of mud." North Carolina has an unusual distinctions as being home to four major gemstones: rubies, emeralds, diamonds and sapphires. In 2003, the North American Emerald Mine in Hiddenite produced a 1,869-carat emerald. Featured in this article is Mason's Sapphire Mine.

"Nearly 50 years ago, the city erupted over the production of an ward-winning play about gay men and AIDS. The battle set a rigid mold for Charlotte's approach to the performing arts. We haven't broken it yet." For years after "Angels" appeared, Charlotte arts funding operated on the principal that if they didn't like a production connected with gay or left-centered themes they wouldn't fund it. This was backed by a voting bloc on the Charlotte city council known as the "Gang of Five".
