Abstract:
Though it provenance cannot be absolutely ascertained, the list abstracted appears to be complete with upwards of 1800 names of all landowners for Orange County for the year 1816, with location ,acreage and value of land for each owner. The Direct Tax of 1816 was a federally imposed tax for financing the War of 1812. The first Direct Tax was established in 1798.

Originally thought to be tax rolls, the lists are in fact census records taken by order of the Continental and Provincial Congress on Aug. 25, 1775. their purpose is not understood but they have great value for Pitt County, when accounting for the loss of most early record due to the courthouse fire of 1858.

Paul Carrington was born September 25, 1808 at home on Stagville plantation. His father and grandfather were part of the state's planter society and becoming a planter was Carrington's passion. He can be portrayed as the quintessential planter for his diversified investments, extensive land holdings, and paternal approach to slaves under his care.

Abstract:
In a time when genealogy and local history are becoming more accessible to the amateur, there is a call for more cooperation between trained historians, local historians and genealogists. Historians may provide a wider prospective on genealogy while the genealogist uncovers important evidence for social history.
