This commission has the responsibility of collecting and preserving information relating to the history of North Carolina. Among the collection are 5,000 manuscript volumes, over 1,000 maps, and 250 state newspapers dating from 1751. Dr. A.R. Newsome heads the commission.

In 1933, Governor Ehringhaus appointed Edwin Gill to lead the newly created North Carolina Paroles Commission. One of his duties is to investigate carefully all the cases of individuals on Death Row to be certain the individual receives a last fair chance to be heard.

The General Assembly created this department in 1925, and it has the responsibility of supervising all state expenditures. The Governor is the nominal head of the department, but the duties of the department are performed by an assistant director. Frank Dunlap of Wadesboro is the current Assistant Director. He is a former member of the General Assembly and Director of Personnel.
