Neil Harbisson is a cyborg activist who had a Wi-Fi enabled antenna osseointegrated into his skull. It allows the colorblind artist to hear the light frequencies of color, from visible to ultraviolet and infrared. Harbisson will speak about this controversial issue in Durham this weekend.

In 2016, a new public television series called Reel South will air on UNC-TV and other public channels across the South. The series is a collaboration between UNC-TV, the Southern Documentary Fund, and South Carolina Educational Television and includes documentaries about the American South, not just North Carolina.

At Durham’s Moogfest, Gaynes will speak about musical technology and ritual in twenty-first-century shamanistic practice. As Gaynes explains it, a well-planned dance party can be akin to a shamanistic ritual, with potential benefits to mind, body, and spirit.

Tara Dunsmore was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 and underwent a double mastectomy. After her breast reconstruction, Dunsmore trained in advanced 3-D areola tattooing and founded Pink Ink Tattoo in Raleigh. Now she performs realistic-looking areola tattoos on breast cancer survivors from across the country.

Christine Newton Bush of Boone, North Carolina came out as a transgender woman to her family in 2004, and her sister Diana has been documenting the family’s evolution since then. The documentary, The Ties That Bind, covers the family’s tense discourse and growing acceptance of Christine. The documentary premiers at the Cucalorus Film Festival in Wilmington in November.
