Abstract:
The Carolina wren is the largest wren in the eastern United States, with the Florida wren being a close second. It is marked conspicuously with a white stripe above the eyes, and both male and female have the same coloration. The birds are reddish or cinnamon brown above and buff-colored below. They have white chins and very narrow black barrings on the wings. Peterson describes his observations of a nesting Carolina wren.

Abstract:
Near Ingold in Sampson County, the Coharie and Six Runs Creeks join to form the Black River, which flows 66 miles before emptying into the Cape Fear River 14 miles above Wilmington. The Black River was a commercial highway from the colonial period until the late 19-century. Peterson describes a journey down the river in which he discovers its history and explores its natural surroundings.
