The Travel and Tourism Division of the North Carolina Department of Commerce, established in 1937, advertises in out-of-state publications to attract tourists, and operates five Welcome Centers on the major interstate entrances to the state. These centers stock both pamphlets and hundreds of brochures produced by state agencies and privately-operated tourist attractions.

The late Grover C. Robbins, Jr. renovated the Tweetsie locomotive and railroad in 1957, turning it into Blowing Rock’s most popular tourist attraction. The route of what came to be known as Tweetsie was the Linville River Railway division of East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad. The train now operates along a closed circuit and is maintained by Frank Coffey.

Precious gems, such as diamond, emerald, ruby, and sapphire, have been discovered throughout the state. The largest single emerald crystal ever found in North America came from the Rist Mine at Hiddenite in Alexander County.

The Clingendael Investment Corporation, a Dutch firm of which Julius Verwoerdt is chairman, is building an elegant resort near Chapel Hill called Hotel Europa. Verwoerdt is a Dutch entrepreneur who lives in Durham, and has owned the largest chain of hotels in Holland. Hotel Europa will have a significant impact to the Research Triangle area because of the distinct European influence of the ownership, management and design.

Several years ago, Carolina Trace opened to the golfing community near Pinehurst and Southern Pines. Due to its overwhelming success, a new sister community, Carolina Lakes, was developed eight miles away. The University of North Carolina Sea Grant Program has made substantial contributions to the state’s coastal resources, marine education, research, and economy. Sea Grant has also worked with commercial fishermen, helping them to develop new and improved technology for handling nets, crab pots and other fishing gear.
