The New NC Transportation Museum at Historic Spenser Shops had its grand opening on September 12 with special events over the weekend for the media, government officials and volunteers. Events included facility tours, rail service, the dedication of the Bob Julian Roundhouse, a black-tie gala and concluded on Sunday with a grand opening for the public.

Many of North Carolina’s historic sites saw major damage from Hurricanes Bertha on July 12 and Fran on September 5-6, 1996. While Fort Fisher saw little more than the usual amount of erosion and a sand/debris covered highway due to the newly erected riparian wall, other sites experienced a massive amount of toppled trees and damage to facilities and historic buildings. While most of the NC government offices in Raleigh were closed in the week after, NC State Historic Preservation Office personnel were working to contact preservation officials in all 54 counties in the declared disaster area.

With the completion of the 1957 North Carolina state legislature session, there is no indication of changes to the upward trend of state budgets and taxes. Both expenditures and revenues will exceed $22 billion in the 1958 as compared to $9 billion ten years ago.

Karl Robbins, a retired textile executive, had his first introduction to North Carolina in the late 1920s as a stockholder in Burlington Mills. Following the development of other mills in the state, Robbins has decided to provide land for the Research Triangle to play a part in North Carolina's future growth.

In 1951 the Powell Bill provided an annual appropriation out of the State Highway and Public Works Fund motor fuel tax to be allocated to North Carolina's cities and towns. For 1957, allocations reached over $6 million for over 405 cities.

North Carolina State Superior Court Judges in Charlotte and Greensboro ruled against last-minute legal efforts to block integration in public schools starting in September. Although other cities are still working on solving legal actions, over 322,000 African American students are enrolled in public schools for the coming term.

During the first six months of 1957, investments in new industrial plants in North Carolina almost doubled from the corresponding period in 1956. investments in the first half of the year totaled over $58,000,000 in 94 new plants.

According to the revised estimates made by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, over 35,000 fewer people harvested crops from over 258,000 fewer farm acres in 1957 versus 1956. The top crops of corn, cotton, and tobacco all saw a decline in the number of acres farmed with a net loss of over $1 million in principal money crops.

Southern Railway purchased the outstanding stock of the Atlantic and East Carolina Railway Company. The 96 mile railway extends from a connection with the Southern at Goldsboro, North Carolina to the Atlantic Ocean port at Morehead City. After four years of negotiation, the A&EC will continue to be operated as a separate short line railroad.

The first phase of the Department of Secondary Roads was presented to the North Carolina State Highway Commission. The phase dealt with unpaved rural secondary roads carrying more than 50 vehicles per day, finding over 9,300 miles of these secondary roads in the state. Paving these roads is estimated to cost over $129 million.

Sales tax collections for the past twelve months have barely come up to collections from the previous twelve months. Sales tax estimates indicate that income payments are not going to do any more than meet legislative estimates, a reflection of current business conditions.
