Abstract:
Railroading began in North Carolina in 1833 when fifteen miles of track were laid from the Virginia border to the town of Weldon. Other construction would soon follow. Today, the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, which came into being on July 1, 1967, has one-sixth of its total mileage, or 1,600 miles, in the state. Seaboard employs over 4,000 people with an annual payroll of $44 million.

Richard B. Johnson is president of American Drew, Inc., located in North Wilkesboro. Originally a casket company, Johnson's father Andrew and three partners decided to go into the furniture business and founded the American Furniture Company in 1972. Today American Drew employs around nine hundred and had nationwide sales of over $19 million in 1971.

Leo J. Heer has been managing director of the Southern Furniture Exhibition Building in High Point for nineteen years, starting in 1953. Prior to this he had worked for the National Retail Furniture Association since 1938 as editor of the National Furniture Review and as director of the merchandising division. Heer will retire from his present position on November 1, 1972.

This article presents information on We the People of North Carolina magazine\r\ntwo decades of manufacturing history in North Carolina. The company has four manufacturing installations at Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Raleigh, and Elizabeth City with a total of almost two million square feet of plant space. Thousands of employees earn an annual payroll of over $25 million, and the estimated value of products shipped from the plants in 1973 is $138 million.

Abstract:
When the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill founded the UNC Press in 1922, there were then only three state supported university presses in existence - the universities of Illinois, Washington, and California. UNC Press published its first book in 1923, and since then about 1,500 more titles have been issued, with some 700 still in print. Five men have served as directors of the press, including Matthew Hodgson, the current director.

Abstract:
Carolina Enterprises, Inc., which came to Tarboro in Edgecombe County over a decade ago, is one of eastern North Carolina's largest manufacturing industries. Each year the huge plastics plant makes enough Santas, sleighs, reindeer, and other Christmas decorations to fill 2,300 freight cars and at least that many trucks. The company employs over 900 with an annual payroll of $6 million.
