Abstract:
UNC chemists Vyas Sharma and David Lawrence were funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to diagnose diseases in remote African villages by having people spit on seeds. They hope to turn seeds into a cheap, transportable diagnostic kit by tricking seeds into germinating only when they come into contact with an infected patient’s saliva.

Abstract:
UNC researchers are working on a model to understand the relationship between wildlife conservation interventions, societal responses, and positive outcomes. They hope their research can help inform decisions that balance conservation efforts and the livelihoods of the Masai villagers in the Serengeti.

Abstract:
UNC researchers have been researching HIV prevention and treatment, sexually transmitted disease management, and malaria vaccine development in Lilongwe, Malawi. They are using spatial-epidemiology data in vaccine trials to study communities vulnerable to mosquitos with malaria and to determine their response to treatments.

Abstract:
Scott Singleton and his lab at UNC are doing research on bacterial drug resistance and antibiotics, and their work could lead to a new drug that doesn’t require high costs. They are conducting biological and genetic experiments to find inhibitors of the enzyme RecA that’s in nearly all bacteria.

Abstract:
Charles Mitchell, a disease ecologist, thinks a virus is killing the California grasslands. Mitchell is studying the barley yellow dwarf virus and hopes that it will help model how diseases interact with their environments to become wide-spread epidemics.

Abstract:
Bird flu is a danger wherever people mingle with birds, especially in crowded, unsanitary conditions. For years, the H5N1 bird flu has been considered an imminent threat to public health because it can transfer from birds to humans. UNC researcher Ray Pickles is trying to find what can prevent the bird flu from becoming a pandemic.

Abstract:
Strains of tuberculosis have mutated and become resistant to multiple drugs due to decades of inconsistent drug supplies, drug shortages, and poor drug quality. According to UNC researchers, we are potentially getting close to a bacteria that we have no tools or weapons against. In response, they are studying causes of the disease and exploring new treatment options for patients in Africa.
