"At a high school in Lenoir County, a band director and his students carry on a musical legacy that stretches from eastern North Carolina's historic Sugar Hill district to the birth of funk." Kinston natives Dick Knight, Melvin Parker, Maceo Parker, Nathaniel Jones and Levi Rasbury were members of the James Brown Band. They were in the studio in Charlotte in 1965, when Brown recorded "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag", cited as one of the first funk songs.

From 1936 to 1966, a little guidebook known as the "Green Book" served as an essential tool for African American travel. In recent times, a $148,000 grant for the "Green Book Project" has been set up to document north Carolina sites found in the guide. Angela Thope is director of the North Carolina African American Heritage Commission which administers the project.
