Chris Roth of Old Fort sculpts totem poles, animals, and people with a unique instrument - a chainsaw. Taught by his father, Roth fetches an average of $100 a foot for his work. More elaborate pieces are priced higher. At twenty-four, he is the youngest chainsaw carver in the country.

During the Christmas season, some of the most cherished memories occur around a hearth with a decorated mantle. Some of the best-known places with distinctive hearths include Asheville's Biltmore Estate, with sixty-five fireplaces, and the Grove Park Inn, which boasts two fireplaces that can burn logs up to eight feet long.
