Opposition to Amendment 1, a measure that would change the state constitution to ban gay marriage, continues to gain supporters decreasing the gap in projected polling results to 55% for 41% against. Fundraising remains a key component of campaigning, with two main organizations raising money both for and against the amendment. Reported donations for The Coalition to Protect NC Families, anti-amendment, are at $2.2 million while the pro-amendment group, Vote for Marriage, garnered $1.2 million from its supporters. The vote will occur on May 8th during primary elections.

Abstract:
Tracy Hollister, a gay rights activist, rallied individuals from the OutRaleigh festival to voting booths to vote against Amendment 1, that anti-gay marriage amendment. Despite these and other efforts to defeat Amendment 1 it passed 61-38 percent. With its passage, gay marriage can now only be recognized if a federal measure affording equal rights to homosexual couples is passed by the Supreme Court.

Martin Marietta owns the RDU Quarry which is currently looking to expand due to increased demand for crushed stone to build the Triangle Expressway. The quarry is located near the Wyngate subdivision and expanding the quarry would intrude on the community's boundaries. Projected quarry expansion would result in dumping excess dirt from mining in an area near the subdivision's entrance at Ebenezer Church Road.

Republicans on the Wake Forest Board of Commissioners blocked a public vote on a one-half cent tax increase on transit. A similar one-half tax has been approved in Durham and Orange County voters will weigh-in this fall. The tax would aid in extending a light-rail transit between Raleigh and Cary.

N.C. State has expanded student housing into an area near the neighborhood of Stanhope in Raleigh. The large housing complex is incongruous with a housing plan created by community members in 1999. Stanhope denizens originally planned to integrate student housing with members of the community to create a \"urban village\" with more diverse housing options and locally owned businesses but instead the university has erected large dorm-like housing for the growing student population.

Due to this annual increase, city planners must accommodate a burgeoning population by building up not out; much of Raleigh County's land is either developed or protected natural environments. Increased housing in urban areas demands greater transportation efficiency and to compensate, county voters will vote on raising transit taxes one half cent.

The Roanoke Rapids Theater was constructed in 2005 at a cost of $21.5 and was intended to promote economic growth by becoming a tourist stop along heavily travelled I-95. This venture proved to be a bust and now local residents are suing Roanoke Rapids and Halifax County for compensation in property tax after the grand theater raised land assessments.

A new Amtrak and high-speed rail service for Raleigh has reached its funding needs of $60 million and construction on the new Union Station. This is unfortunate news for Citrix, software firm that purchased warehouse space for a new headquarters in the area of the proposed station. Discussions between N.C. Department of Transportation, City Planning and Economic Development officials, and Citrix managers are ongoing concerning management of the buildings between West Street and West Morgan and West Hargett Streets.

The Dix Park in Raleigh was created after the General Assembly closed the Dorothea Dix Hospital. Since then, a battle by concerned citizens ensued to keep the park open for public use. Council of State ruled on Tuesday to put the city of Raleigh in control of the 325 acre park, keeping it open for the foreseeable future.
