The North Carolina Coastal Federation is a nonprofit organization that protects the natural North Carolina coast. Formed in 1982 in response to peat miners’ plans to harvest land near the Pamlico and Albemarle sounds, the federation members spend much of their time removing crab pots and other debris from coastal waters.

A Charlotte-based program assisting the city’s homeless provided its recipients a second chance for a better quality life. Assisting Urban Ministry Center with its mission to help end homelessness were services such as temporary housing during the winter at local churches. Information about the program included the individuals for whom the facility is named, John and Pat Moore. This information also cited the inspiration for Urban Ministry Center’s founding, Denver Moore, a formerly homeless individual who wrote a book about his experience.

The justice system in North Carolina got its day in court through an examination of its inadequately funded courts. It’s a factor making North Carolina among the lowest ranking states for spending. As for where that low per capita spending’s impact can be most keenly felt, the author asserted it’s those seated at the counselor’s bench.

North Carolina’s recent changes in tax laws countered large companies such as Uber and Lyft attempting to avoid work-related taxes by classifying workers as independent contractors. As for how employees may help in the avoidance of this issue, the author advised those who may be vulnerable to misclassification to keep track of their status. Those particularly vulnerable to misclassification are workers hired through staffing agencies.
