Abstract:
Opened just below the top-most portion of Beech Mountain in 1979 by Fred and Margie Pfohl. Given that Beech Mountain is the highest incorporated community east of the Mississippi River (5,000 feet) above sea level), Fred's General Mercantile has the distinction of being the highest sitting business of its kind on the right hand side of the country. Fred was previously a former manager of the Land of Oz theme park and director of ski operations on Beech Mountain.

Abstract:
"Neighbors in a Johnston County community saw their beloved rail town fading and got to work. Together they've shown what's possible with a con-do attitude and the power of positivity." Founded in 1873, Selma became a busy railroad hub. By 2017, Selma was struggling and hit its lowest point with Covid in 2020. Melissa Dooley and Cindy Brookshire are noted for their volunteer work for for bringing renewed interest foe Selma.
