Abstract:
There is a rising interest among North Carolina farmers in growing shiitake and other edible mushrooms to supplement income, and to promote its health benefits. Although most mushrooms are non-poisonous, North Carolina hosts several species that potentially could cause death if eaten. This article discusses how to identify and grow mushrooms, as well as where to buy fresh mushrooms, and mushroom nutrition.
Abstract:
Among hundreds of festivals held across North Carolina, most celebrate products grown on the farm or caught off the coast. This article provides a list and descriptions of festivals co-sponsored by North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives, occurring throughout the year. The list begins with the North Carolina Turkey Festival, starting on September 8.
Abstract:
The Western Carolinian was a weekly newspaper published in Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina, during the years 1820-1842. The newspaper included marriage announcements, each providing photographs and detailed descriptions of the bridal attire, family, cake, honeymoon destination, and other wedding features. Excerpts of wedding announcements are provided in this article, and demonstrate the differences between wedding reporting in newspapers today and those in early 19th century North Carolina.
