Abstract:
U.S.S. HURON wrecked on Nags Head's reefs in November 24, 1877. One hundred eight lives were lost during the wrecking despite efforts by Capt. B. F. Meekins, head of the Nags Head lifesaving station. The HURON was a 610 steamer commanded by Captain George P. Ryan when the ship left Hampton roads bound for Key West before a storm blew her ashore.
Abstract:
Blacknall, a native of Henderson, had been doing mission work at Nenana, Alaska for a number of years. A friend who had a ten-day-old baby was nervous about making a flight from Fairbanks to Barrow to rejoin her husband and asked Blacknall to come with her. Blacknall describes her flight of 2,280 miles over terrain that few Americans had seen at that time.
Abstract:
At the age of thirty-four, William Hawkins was probably the youngest person to elected Governor of North Carolina. He served three terms, most of it during the War of 1812. Sadler describes Hawkins' activities in preparing the state for war.
