Abstract:
Thomas Benton Upchurch was a prominent resident of Wake County. He wrote a book entitled The Story of My Life. The article briefly describes Mr. Upchurch's background before reprinting a portion of the book. This chapter titled 'My Closing Talk' is Mr. Upchurch delivering a speech to his children. The speech includes snippets of wisdom and advice such as sobriety and performing your best at any occupation.

This article includes the remarkable story of Estonian refugees landing in Wilmington. Fifteen people, ten men and five women, completed a trip across the Atlantic in a mere 37-foot sloop. These individuals were fleeing invading Russian forces. The unknown author of this article spoke to the Captain of Roland for this story. Members aboard Roland had a fascinating journey to get to Wilmington including stops in Sweden, England, and Madeira Islands seeking refuge. The voyage across the Atlantic, from Madeira Islands to North Carolina, took 28 days under mostly sail power.

This article is a brief story about a moonshining raid in Transylvania County. In this instance, moonshiners hid their illicit substance underground. A large cave was used to hide the still and accessed through a 221-foot long tunnel. The still was ingeniously hidden in plain sight, not more than \"200 yards of a well-traveled road, within 3 miles of a populous town, and within a maintained cornfield.\"
