She describes experiences as the wife of a naval officer--Admiral Thomas G. W. Settle including service aboard airships (1924-1929), his participation in balloon races and experiments in lighter-than-air travel, as well as her own experiences in airship travel. She also describes life in China and the Far East while her husband was assigned to various commands within the Asiatic Fleet (1934-1938, 1945-1946). Other commentary concerns her life during World War II, residence at Newport, R.I., travel to and living in Turkey, her husband's duty in New Orleans with the 8th Naval District, in San Diego with the Pacific Fleet, and in Norway prior to his retirement in 1957.

Doris M. Cromartie Oral History Interview

Mrs. Cromartie, a resident of Charlotte, N.C., became involved in Democratic Party activities during the mid-1950s and early 1960s. She was deeply involved in the 1960 election campaign in the state, serving as a principal supporter of Terry Sanford for governor. In 1964 Mrs. Cromartie moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where she became a case worker for the Regional Office of the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission (1966-1973).

Charles W. Rush, Jr., Oral History Interview

Capt. Rush, a member of the USNA Class of 1941, was a native of Alabama. During much of his career he was involved in submarine operations, including duty in the THRESHER, BILLFISH, CARBONERO, QUEENFISH, AND BLACKFISH. During assignment to the Office of Naval Operations he made recommendations that involved the polar passage of the USS NAUTILIS and he was also involved in the development of the Subroc Missile System. He describes his experience at the Naval Academy and his WWII service aboard submarines.

Robert W. Hayler, Jr., Oral History Interview

Capt. Hayler, a member of the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1941, is the son of Vice Admiral Hayler. During a twenty-nine year career, he served in the FANNING, GEARING, HARMON, HUNTINGTON, GOODRICH, and JOHN PAUL JONES. Among his numerous duty assignments were the Bureau of Naval Personal, aide to the Chief of Naval Operations, staff of U.S. CinCeur, commander Destroyer Division 132, Chief of Staff for ComCarrierDivision 17, commander of Destroyer Squadron 32, Chief of Staff for the South Atlantic Force, and Office of CNO Op 06.
