Captain Bennett recounts his early background in Ohio, his experiences at the U.S. Naval Academy, and his service during World War II. Of particular importance is his description of duty on the USS SAN FRANCISCO during the naval battle of Guadalcanal, action for which he was awarded the Navy Cross and Purple Heart. He also relates the details of five war patrols in the USS QUEENFISH, rescue of Australian and British prisoners-of-war from the South China Sea, and the deep sea evasion of depth charges. Captain Bennett details postwar duties as commander of a submarine division and a flotilla and his involvement with the Navy's deep submergence programs and the bathyscaph TRIESTE. The interviews conclude with a synopsis of Captain Bennett's postnaval career in oceanography.

John E. Greenbacker oral history interview

Captain Greenbacker served for almost thirty years before retiring from the Navy in August 1969. Although originally assigned to the aircraft carrier USS YORKTOWN, most of his sea duty was spent in destroyer escorts, and it is this type of ship with which he is most closely identified. In his interviews, Captain Greenbacker discusses his experiences while at the U.S. Naval Academy and his duty in the USS YORKTOWN from July 1940 until June 1942. He comments on the development of the carrier's role in the Navy during World War II, the use of fighter direction, and the ship's involvement in the Battle of the Coral Sea and at Midway. Captain Greenbacker discusses his transfer to subchasers, reverse lend-lease with the British, and his duty in SC 1472. He describes duty aboard the USS STEWART, USS NEUNZER, and USS LLOYD E. ACREE during the remainder of and immediately after the war. Included are comments on ship preparation; convoy duty in the Atlantic; supply delivery for operations in the Philippines at Leyte, Mindora, and Luzon landings; and hunter-killer operations in the South China Sea.

Robert J. Celustka oral history interview

Captain Celustka describes his youth as the son of immigrants in Baltimore, Maryland; his appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1940; experiences at the Academy; and his being turned back to the Class of 1941 due to a soccer injury. He comments on his assignment to the USS NORTH CAROLINA in April, 1941, as an ordnance officer and his service on the NORTH CAROLINA for thirty eight months. Celustka recounts his experiences in flight training during 1944 and the circumnavigation of the world in 1947-1948 in the USS VALLEY FORGE. Other commentary concerns duty at the Naval Academy as an aviation instructor; a leg injury from a minor aviation accident; instructor duty at Pensacola, Florida; and assignments to the Air War College at Maxwell Air Base, operations officer in the USS MIDWAY, staff duty at COMNAV, and duty at North Island and Treasure Island.

Richards T. Miller Oral History Interview

Captain Miller, a native of Pennsylvania who was reared in Washington, D.C., received his degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Webb Institute in New York in 1940. He subsequently completed graduate study at MIT and in recent years was named an honorary member of the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1941. In this interview, Captain Miller comments on his education, his commissioning as a USNR officer, and his assignment to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. He discusses working on the construction of the USS IOWA and USS MISSOURI, before being reassigned to the Annapolis Yacht Yard. He describes reviewing the design and overseeing construction for PT boats during World War II; serving on the crew of the Cache VAMARIE for Naval Academy racing; and his assignment to the Boston Navy Yard, where he was responsible for design and estimates for ship repairs.

Commander William Heavey is third generation professional military officer, with both his father and grandfather graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. In this interview Commander Heavey describes growing up in a military family and attending the U.S. Naval Academy. He comments on service in the USS DICKERSON, conducting patrol and convoy duty in the Atlantic early in World War II, and reassignment to the USS ARKANSAS for the invasion of Casablanca. He further describes reporting to new construction with the USS HAINES (DE 792); duty in Europe and North Africa; an incident created by a violation of blackout conditions; duty in the USS MARYLAND during "Operation Magic Carpet" ; and service aboard the USS TOPEKA in Japan and China.

Captain Vail, a native of Mississippi, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy as a part of the Class of 1941. In this interview, Captain Vail comments on his background and early education, pre-war assignment to the USS WEST VIRGINIA, his service during World War II, and his duties in the post-war period until his retirement in 1971. For World War II, he relates his experiences in the USS FANNING, the USS QUICK off North Africa and Sicily, and the USS HAWLEY, USS O'BRIEN, and the USS NEALLY in the Pacific. Ships served aboard after 1945 include the HMS BROADSWORD, USS KROUS, USS FISKE, and the USS GRAND CANYON.

He comments on duty aboard the USS HERBERT in the Caribbean in 1941, convoy duty in the North Atlantic, sonar training, anti-submarine duty in the Gulf of Mexico in the USS DAHLGREN, and flight training and PV I instructor duty. Post-war stations include duty in the Philippines, Hawaii, and D.C.; Mediterranean service in the USS CORAL SEA; and a tour at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
