4 11231 OH0032 Edmund Jones Lilly, Jr., Oral History Interview April 6, 1976 Colonel Lilly served with the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe during World War I. Subsequently he was assigned to various stateside posts and to the Panama Canal Zone before being sent to the Philippines in 1940. Colonel Lilly was involved in engagements with the Japanese on Luzon and was captured there when U.S. forces surrendered in 1942. He survived the Bataan death march. Between 1942 and 1945 he was a P.O.W. held in the Philippines, Formosa, Korea, and Manchuria. After the war he served in several stateside commands and in Paris before retiring in 1953. Much of this interview concerns the 1942 to 1945 period.

Jones Oral History Interview May 25, 1976 General Jones graduated from the University of Kansas in 1937 and was commissioned 2d Lieutenant in the Marine Corps Reserves in 1938. He describes his early military training, the Marine Corps in the late 1930s, and duty on the Pacific Coast. Jones tells of being transferred to the Atlantic coast prior to the outbreak of W.W. II, shore patrol at Charleston, S.C., and duty at a British base in Iceland. During interview #2 General Jones discusses his service in the South Pacific during World War II. Attention is given to duty and battle campaigns in and around New Zealand, Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa.

6 10933 OH0092 Edward G. Miller Oral History Interview November 20, 1987 In his initial interview Miller describes his background in Pennsylvania, his education and employment prior to entering the Naval Academy, his experiences at the Academy, and his service during World War II. Included in the wartime duty was service in the USS WASHINGTON operating in the Atlantic, assignment to the DD GHERARDI and its involvement in the Normandy Invasion.
