ANNUAL REPORT OF PSYCYOLOGY DEPARTMENT

Reporting Period: June 1, 1974 to May 31, 1975.

Narrative:

One of the major occurences in the Department this past year was approval by a
visiting committee from the State Department of Public Instruction of the pro-
gram in school psychology. This means that our graduates can now be certified
as school psychologists in North Carolina. This past year the Department of
Psychology increased by over 700, compared with last year, the number of total
student enrollments. As an aid in handling some of this increased enrollment,
the Department added one fulltime faculty member. The Departmental Code was
completed this year, and has been submitted to the Faculty Senate. Of those
students graduating, five psychology majors completed their work Magna Cum
Laude. Two students were honored by the Phi Beta Kappa at East Carclina.
Publications and presentations before professional groups continue at a high
rate, and there are a number of on-going research projects presently being
carried out by a large number of faculty members. This spring, the ECU
Psychology Department, in conjunction with the North Carolina Psychological

Association, sponsored a spring meeting on campus, with the major speaker being

Dr. James V. McConnell, one of the outstanding psychologists in the nation.

Dr. William F. Grossnickle was re-elected Southeastern Vice President of Psi
Chi, the national honorary society in psychology, and represents all of the
chapters in the southern and southeastern states. Dr. Thomas E. Long completed
a year as President of the North Carolina Psychological Association, and did an
outstanding job representing the NCPA and ECU. Departmental faculty have been
active on both University and Departmental committees, and in community affairs.
A Psychology Department retreat was held involving both faculty and students,
and many helpful suggestions and ideas have been derived. It is hoped that the
retreat will become an annual occurence. In spite of the large increase in en-
rollment and the unavoidable lack of space and equipment, the Department has
met the demands placed upon it, and we plan to continue to do so in the coning
year. i

Comments on projections for the future:

One new faculty member is to be added in the school psychology program
which will greatly strengthen this program. It is anticipated that

we shall be able to expand the number of students ip this program in
an attempt to help meet the very large number of requests we receive
for our graduates. A major project to be initiated in the Department
this year will involve en attempt to revise the undergraduate progran
in such a way as to provide BA graduates in psychology with marketable
skills. There is a tremendous need for aides as well as professionals
in the mental health field, and we feel that BA Degree people with the
proper training can help to meet these needs. If and when more space
becomes available, additional research is planned.
