that the records of cotton grow-

We have noted recently the
achievement of Mr. E. D. Thomp-

Bna, in producing this year, 1,729
pounds, of four 430 pound bales,
of cotton on one acre, at a net
profit of $64.78 on the crop, at the
price of 64 cents a pound. But
this is not the only good record
made in the State this year.

~Tho cotton mills of Spartan-
burg county offered two money

premiums last winter for the best
- cotton crops made in their
neighborhood this year. Our

local correspondent reported on
Thursday that the committee on
awards met the day before and
qvnsidered the several competing
records, which were announced
ae follows: oCol, T. J- Moore
geceived the prize of $100 for the
best five acre record. the yield
being 8,252 pounds of seed cot-

to the acre. ~Nextto him came
Mr. H. H Arnold, with 7,566
pounds, or at the rate of 1,513
pounds the acre. T
In the one-acre contest, still
more striking yields were ~eport-
ed. Mr. 3. K+ Whito reported
3,212 pounds, and the priza was
awarded to him accordingly; his
record being protested, however,
on the ground of alleged oirreg-
ularity or mistake on Mr, WhiteT-
part. Uther records; which were
- pot challenged, were those of Mr.
Jobn O. Lee, 2,704 pounds; Mr, J.

Y. Dilliard, 2,568 pounds, and Mr.

Judge Thomas H. Sutton today
made the following statement:
of instructed the sheriff from the
bench this morning to prepare a
list of all parties not hay:vg paid
their taxes by Saturday night,
tne 18th inst., and to furnish the
same to this court. The list wil
then be handed to the solicitor to
be dealt with according to the
law. The sheriff has no vorce in
this matter.

The new revenue provides the
penalty of imprisonment for
failure to pay taxes. This step
shows that Judge Sutton means
t» enforce the law. His order
takes the matter out of the sheriff
and puts it in the courts. "Char-

if the population of the United
States is 70,000,000, it probably
iocludes about 20,000,000 of the
male geuder who have reached
the smoking age. On that basis
of calculation the average con-
simption of cigars during the
last year was 200 per capita, for
the total number sold in this
country was $,093,169,0 7. But as
not more than half the men smoke
c.gars the actual ayerage con-
sumption was probably double
that number. The qiantity of
imported cigars used in the
United States is very much over-
estimated. oLast year it was or-y
39,669,362, or about 34 for each
number ef the smoking popula-
tion.

There has been a comparatively
swall increase in the consumption
of cigars- There was a decrease
of 172,784,705 last year from
1896, and the increase from
1887 has been less than 400,
000,000. But this is accounted
forby an enormous increase in
the use of cigaretses, which has
douoled almost twice in the last
ten years. The total for 1887

jumped to 5,046,308,770, which
will make the average about 500
