NOT A WISE PLAN.

There was # meeting of the Cabinet
in oWashington on ~Tuesday, and
among the subjects discussed was the
advisability of sending supplies to
Alaska to relieve ihe people who bave
gone there in search of gold. The

press dispatches say:
oSecretary Alger brought up the
- Klordike rush and adverted to the
probable necessity of reliet ~measures
for the benefit of Americens who have
rushed heedlessly into the gold ficids
but the discussion of this matter was
yery informal ard fruitless ot results
Secretary Alger laid betore the cabi
net several telegrams urging relief tor
stricken prospectors, including one
from the citizensT committee of Te
coma. representing that distress ex"
isted already at Dawson City, stating
tliat starvation bad begun and praying
that #& revenue cutter be sent with
supplis to 't. Mic.aels and chances
being taken on getting the supplies to
those in need of them. The discus-
sion made it cvident that the cabinet
was not quite clear that the govern-
ment authorities had werrant in law
~tor.{urn:hing supplies but Secretary
& lger telegrs phed to Sen.tor Perkine,
cf Calticrnia, who is interested in a
line to Alas! a, asking him it he ~would
underteke to deliver a sbip load of
supplies at St. Michaels. I it be
found that the law will net permit the
governinent to send supplies then re-|
lief will be furaishec by privave per-
gons in order that a horror may rot
grew cut of the rush for gold.

Representative Gannon, of T)-
Jinois, Chairman of the Commit-

oad you lost your eye before then,
or have you lost it since? was the
next question.

oSince, answered the old map,
~Turn the sound side of your face to
me so I van see your profile, said Mr.
Clay, preemptorily, and the man obey.

a moment's scrutiny ~of the profile.
