tures 1s taken from the New York

oAt the fiist glance it seems
Strange that the postal sevice of
the United States should cost
$9,000,000 a year above receipts,
Waile that of Great Britain yields
& protit of over $14,000,000, thatiof
France nearly $10,000,000, that cf
Garmany $6,000,000, and that of
Russia $5,000,000 and that of
eyen India and Japan $1,5. 0,000.
About the only other nation
whose poatal service doss not pay
expenses are Canada, Norway,
Siam, Chili, Peru, Bulgaria and
Bolivia. Butlightis thrown on

thatthe United States has six
times the length of postal routes
