There are some phages of the " politi-

The ReErLEcTOR proposes to point them

4. There are two kinds of Re-
publicans, one inside and the oth-
er outside the PeopleTs party, but
both Repab'icans alike. The for-
mer is a Republican working un-
der cover. Why should we permit
them to.biud as hand and foot
aud deliver us to the Republican
party. .
| 5. We believe in white men

governing North Caroliaa. Why
then should we basely sacrifice
every feeling of our nature and
by our votes, through fusion, put
negroes in office throughout the
State?

These are some of the qies-
tions which are troubling sincere
Populists in this campaign. The
slegan oanything to beat the
Democrats has no _ pleasant
sound to my ears. and it cannot
rally the hosts of Populism in
this campaign. When the Peos
pleTs party manfullvy battled for
its principles I was willing to
follow where my convictions led
and to disagree politically with
my friends and neighbors. Let
jt be distinctly understood that I
am not their enemy and do not
wish to commit myself or them to
Republican and negro rule. I[
trust the lesson will not have to|
be taught before tie rank and file
of the PeopleTs party realize where
this road you now travel ends.
Negro magisirates, sheriffs, con-
stables and commissioners would |
be a striking object lesson in
North Carolina. I kaow many
Populists who feel just as I do.
You say there 1% no source from

which you can derive funds ex-
cept from the people. The peo-
ple cannot be decieved. You are
giving aid and comfort to the Re-
publican party. The trade with
that party is open and notorious.
The contract is signed, sealed:
and delivered. Mr. Hanna will
furnish aburdant money to you
not only for the legitimate pur-

feather the nests of the leaders

who are betraying the cause of

the people.

Respectfully Yours,
JosePuH F. GopuLey.

North Caroliva prospered after
1876 most wopuerfully when we
remember or understand how all
through the last score of yeurs
there has been a steady shrinkage
of values in the United States,
and an unbroken, certaiz decline
in prosperity in most States and
sections business activity, in in-
dustrial enrichment. The Deme-
crats got full control in 1876, and
then began a new era of exter-
prise and growth in population
and development of industries.
When a Radical demogogue de-
nounces and misrepresents the
Democratic supremacy in North
Carolina he loses sight of God
conscience and and truth, and
talks only for temporary. success
of his party. He knows that low
taxes, light burdens, equal laws,
the uprearing of benevolent insti-
tutions, self-taxation of whites
for the aid of RussellTs osavazes
have marked, have distinguished
the entire control of public affairs
in this State. . He knows that, or
he 18 & blustering ignoramous and
should go to school.

Not enough attention has been
givento North Carolina by the
Democrats in this campaign.
Russell's main card he is piaying
is a rediculous and scarrilous de-
nunciation of Democratic mao-
agement. When the Democrats

$30,000,000 of public debt created
in a yeat by his villianons band

they stealing or misapplying the
greater part of the money for
which the bonds issued fetched
in the markets. It isthe old game
of the pot calling the kettle black
wher Radicals calumniate Demo-
crats. Itis the old false cry of
~thiefT by the fellows who are
practicing the deviltry.

The taxas of North Caroliva,
und¢r the Democrats, have been
lower than those of any State in
the American Union.

Two years ago; or less, the
Rads. and Pops. got togetHer in
the Fred Dovglass Legisleture
aud what a fine set of ignorant
tricksters and incompetents they
were. ~They blundered in every
direction, increased expenditures.
were reckless and faise to the
State, aud Russell was chief coun-
cillor, and general advisor, and
was paid well for his little stock
of wisdom and practical law
making."-Wilmington Messen-
ger.

that the Republicans are working the
