The County Candidates Met by a
large Crowd:

CONTINUATION OF MR LAUGHING:
HOUSE'S SPEECH.

Mr. Lauzghinghouse said that he did
not want to close his speech without
tiling his audience something of the
tvo men they were asked to vote for
~for Congress in this district. He paid
a high tribute to Col. W. H. Lucas,
the Democratic nominee, oAgainst him
is a man without conscience, character
or credit, and aman who nas broken
up more homes than any other man in
the county. He then exposed some
of the record of Harry Skinner, the*fu-
sion candidate. He said he could point
out many men who had paid Skinner
25 per cent. interest on money. He
also told several iastances, giving names
ot the parties, vhere Skinner collected
money for northern firms out of our
home dealers, pocacted the money and
reported the man from whom it was
collected as bad, thus robbin one man

~ot his money and another of his char"

firms thus swindled turned
second erder from a merchant sent in
by their salesman, furnishing the latter a
letter from Skinner saying the merchant
was no good. he salesman not be-
lieving the statements made in the let-
ter investigated the matter. Satistying
himself that the bill had been paid by
i the merchant he took the letter to
SkinnerTs office and demanded an ex-
planation, Skinner seeing be was cor
nered tried to shift off the blame on his
clerk. But the salesman, who was none
other than Willian
Russ, now Mayor of Raleigh, would

the well known

not accept any such statement and de-
manded the collected money or blood
on the spot. He got the money.

Mr. Laughinghouse related otaer in"
stances almost similar to this. Ee also
gave the name of a widow whom Skin
ner swindled out of $5CO and caused

{he home to, be advertised for sale to pay

it.

There were some present who voted
tor Skinner two years ago, but after lis-
tening to this speech declared they

could never vote for such a man
again. :

Mr. Laughinghouse made a good
speech all through.

A Card.

Having always voted the Republican
ticket, rince attaining my majority,
knowing that in so doing I was voting
for a government that meant proiection
to American industries, ard to-day, I
am a firm believer in a Protective tar"
iff for American industries and products,
but in view of the changes in our State
government the past two-years ; an ob-

[servation of the government of the daf-

and trimmings to match

ferent offices, cities, towns, &c., has
con inced me that it is tor the hest inter
est ul our sduthland that the Democratic

| party administer the complete govern-

ment of the Same, and I shall therefore
give the State and county democratic
pact myhearty support.
Respectfully,

_ \ E.G, Cox. -
