THE NEW CASABINCA.

- A. N. Cy, IN SILVER KNIGHT.

William C. stood on the deck,
T*T was said he would have fled,

For the flames that Jit the golden wreck
Shone Tround him oTer the dead

Yet calm and peaceful William stood,
Amidst the silver storm,

A creature of heroic blood,
A proud, defiant form.

Twas silverTs day : he would not go,
Without his bossTs word"

That boss now quivering far below,
His voice no longer heard,

He called aloud, oSay, Grover, say,
If yet my task be done?

He knew pot that the chieftain lay
Berett of all save one.

oSpeak, Grover! " once he

cried,

again

oIf I may yet be gone,

And but the mighty shouts replied
And fast the tide rolled on,

Upen his brow he fele its breath
And in his waving hair,

But bravely from that post of death
He looked in dark despair.

And shouted but once move aloud,
oSay, Grover, must I stay?
While oTer him tast, oTer sail .
shroud
Swept silverTs ceaseless sway
Then came that keavy burst of sound,
And Will'am"where was he ?
Go search ChicagoTs street around,
Go ask the silver sea,

and

Nineteen million gallons of beer are
coasumed in tue United Kingdom each
week,

Statistics show that the longest lived
people have generally been those who
made breakfast the principal meat of
the day.

There are 6,000 building and
loan assoUations in the United

States, with 1,800,000 shareholders
and assets aggregating $500,000,090.

Dr. Huggins, the well-known astron"
omer, says the stars are red, white and
blue, according to their ages. The white

stars are the youngest.

a vocabulary of 1,000 words. Of these
he only uses 400 or 500, using the re-
mainder when an idea out of the usual
line of thought occurs to him. Most
of us being only ordinary men, seldum
draw upon the surplus 500 words.

Professor Asa Gray is reported to
have once said that the Washington
elm at Cambridge has been estimated
to produce 7,000,000 leaves, which
would make a surface radiaton of about
five acres in extent and give ou every
fair ¢-y inthe growing season seven
and three-fourths tons of moisture.

The Largest Break We Ever Had.

Again the town of Greenville has
witnessed the largest tebacco break

ever known on this market and goes to
show how muct the managers have
done to make Greenville a centre of ate
traction for business.

The large crowd that brought that
to town
derce of the approval and endorsement
of the good management of the tobacco
market.

sarge " sale to-day 18 evi-

There was indeed a throng of
people, and it looked like a business
mart sure enough. Every house was
tull and prices varied from good to bet-
ter.

The destiny of Greenville is in the
hands of the people. Will they over"
lcok many important features? A
board of trade is a necessity. The bet-
ter government of the town is impera-
tive, and there should be a delight to
make the town attractive, as well as
substantial.

There is more business done in the
town of G-eenville than any town of
the same siz3 in the State, andthe nat-
ural advantages that we possess, with
the pluck and energy of many of the
yeople, 23: towa should have some
manufacturing interests going on, and
a large force of nonproducers employed
in manufacturing. There would be a
stimulus to the farmers who bring
many products and marketable articles
to selT, to go into much larger efforts in
the trucking and poulty,raising &c.
