Description
Bill of sale for Virgil, a 26 year-old enslaved male. Virgil was bought from his enslavers John J. Devane and J. C. Devane and sold to James Murphy. Murphy was the grandfather of Charlotte Pearl Murphy Wright (1876-1965). Wright was married to Robert H. Wright (1870-1934), the first President of East Carolina University which was then called East Carolina Teachers Training School. The transaction was witnessed by Stewart Devane.
