- [note from conservation following earlier e-mail with Patricia: The 1804 date comes from the fact that the map was included in an atlas, The American gazetteer, by Jedidiah Morse, 2nd ed., published in 1804. A version of this map was included in the first edition of Morse’s atlas, which was published in 1797; however, the Mississippi Territory depicted here did not exist until 1798 and was shown as the "Georgia Western Territory" in the earlier version.]
