Governor Dan K. Moore

Raleigh, North Carolina

Dear Governor Moores

I want to express to you my deep disappointment that the General Assembly under your leadership has not rescinded or modified the Speaker Ban Law, a measure which the faculty of East Carolina College has virtually unanimously condemned. To maintain this law bespeaks a failure to understand the crucial Importance in our educational system of freedom of speech and inquiry. I am therefore deeply concerned over the future health of our system of higher education, which in the past has been so justly admired by the nation.

I hope that the study commission which you propose to establish will quickly act to help us regain the freedom which we have lost. I am sure that our faculty will be glad to cooperate with the commission to attain this and.

Sincerely,

James E. Poindexter

Chairman of the Faculty

East Carolina College
