Institute of Outdoor Drama

Extension and Continuing Education
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

We cordially invite you to attend the 27th Annual Managers, Directors
and Promoters Conference sponsored by the Institute of Outdoor Drama
of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This year?Ts
conference will be special in several ways.

Two ?opre-conference? sessions will be offered for participants involved
in starting an outdoor historical drama in their community. Planning
Group Session A will look at the key issues of organization,
fundraising sources and methods, and amphitheatre design and
construction. Planning Group Session B will focus on play
production, including discussion of technical requirements, casting, and
rehearsal.

The general conference will convene on Friday afternoon and run
through Saturday evening. Three half-day workshops will be offered by
experts in their respective fields.

Scott J. Parker, executive director and acting producer of The Lost
Colony (Manteo, NC) will lead a workshop on ?oImproving Production
Quality in Outdoor Historical Drama.? Assisted by key artistic staff
members from The Lost Colony, the workshop will examine elements
found in artistically successful shows and discuss how to better
incorporate those elements in outdoor drama productions today.

William F, Hensley, public relations/marketing consultant and former
director of the North Carolina Division of Travel and Tourism, will
join us to conduct a workshop on ?oWorking Effectively with the
Media,? including how to be interviewed, how to build credibility, and
how to handle a crisis. ;

Alvin H. Reiss, arts management consultant and author of Cash In!
Funding and Promoting the Arts, will be with us to conduct a
workshop on winning corporate support entitled ?oSuccessful Arts
Partnership with Business,? suggesting tactics and strategies to gain
funding and develop marketing tie-ins on your own terms.

Interspersed throughout a lively program of workshops and open
discussion, formal and informal social events provide conference
participants with many opportunities to share thoughts and experiences
with colleagues.

Finally, as you may already know, this will be Mark R. Sumner?Ts last
conference as director of the Institute, as he plans to retire this fall. He
has kindly consented to bestow a few words of wisdom upon us as this
year?Ts dinner speaker, an occasion not to be missed!
