erywhere you turn, there is another continuous
chain of students fidgeting impatiently as they
wait for the numbers to dwindle. ~~The school
needs a system, says one sophomore.

Parking sticker registration is one of the slow-
est lines on campus as students register their
vehicles to obtain the proper permit. The longest
line is, without a doubt, the traffic ticket line where
students pay off those easily mounted violations.
And everyone's favorite line is at the bookstore
cash register where a summer of hard work is
spent in less than an hour.

Sept. 5, when, following a re-
sounding 32-14 victory by the Pi-
rates over a weak Wolfpack
squad, some 2,000 overzealous
fans and revellers swarmed the
field at Carter-Finley stadium and
took down the goalposts. It was
the second time in three years
that such a melee had occurred.

During one part of the fracas,
an NCSU security officer was
punched in his glasses by a
young man he was trying to pull
from the goal-posts. Shattered
glass cut Robert Malasons eye,
and his cheek was broken by the
blow. By the time the celebration
riot had ended, $7,200 damage
had been done to the stadium.

the U S Olympic Festival 1987.
The Festival took place in Ra-
leigh, Durham, Chapel Hill,
Cary, and Greensboro. Over
3,000 athletes participated in 34
scheduled events, many of
which determined the athletes
to compete in the Pan-American
games and 1988 Summer Olym-
pics in Seoul, South Korea.

Coach Bill Carson is confi-
dent that his prodigy will have a

in the top three will qualify him
for the 100-meter dash, of

McNeil is one of the great-
st relay runners in the world
and has competed among the
best. Three of the last relay
teams McNeil ran on in the
Summer of '87 placed first in



each of their races.

His first gold medal came in
June 87 at the U S Olympic
Festival in Durham. He also
won a bronze metal in the 100-
meter dash.

At the Pan-American games
in Indianapolis, Lee ran a su-
perb race with some pretty im-
pressive teammates " Olympic
veterans Harvey Glance and
Carl Lewis, and University of
Pittsburg star Lee McRae.

A first place finish qualified
the team for the World Univer-
sity Games in Rome. Again,
with the efforts of McNeil run-
ning the second leg, the USA
team captured the gold.

As more and more people
are starting to take note of the

talents and potential of Lee Ver-
non McNeil, he says he does
not care much about all the ex-
citement and just likes to be
himself.

The star sprinter is very
humble and grateful for all he
has accomplished. He gives
credit to his fellow ECU team-
mates and said that the 4 x
100 relay team finished fourth in
the Nationals and has the talent
and speed to capture the NCAA
4 X 100 relay title.

Lee now has his sights are
set on preparing for the Olym-
pic trials July 16-23, 1988 in In-
dianapolis and hopefully running
for the gold in Seoul.

Matthew Hall Moore, An-
thony ~~Tyge� Pistorio and Mi-
chael Hart, all students at ECU,
were arrested at the party on
Biltmore Street between Fifth
and Fourth streets. Hart was
charged with being drunk and
disruptive while both Moore and
Pistorio were charged with
drinking in public and resisting
arrest. Moore also was charged
with assault on a police officer.

Students at the party said
police used unnecessary vio-
lence in the arrests of Moore
and Pistorio. Two days after the
melee, Moore had cuts across
his face and on the side of his
nose from where his face had
been forced down onto his
porch. A blood stain on the
porch had yet to be cleaned.

Greg Christeson said he
saw eight officers making one
arrest and that they smashed
Moore's face onto his porch.
He said the officers were un-
provoked.

The people were all on
their property, he said. ~~No
one was on the street. People
were staying on their property.�

But Sgt. A. S. Fordham, the
shift officer in charge at the
scene, said his office had re-
ceived complaints earlier about
the noise and about students
standing in the street. He said
there were students in the
street when officers arrived at
the scene, and that officers
could not find a block party per-
mit anywhere. It was later
learned that the permit had

been denied because the party
was not sponsored by an au-
thorized organization.

Greenville Police Capt. Nel-
son Staton, interim assistant
chief of police, arrived on the
scene at 5:45 p.m. He said he
immediately made several pleas
for students to break up the
party. Some students, he said,
did leave. Others started swear-
ing at the police.

Staton said that in his opin-
ion, officers only used the force
necessary to make the arrests.

Fordham later responded to
abuse charges by saying,
Whenever you've got that size
of a crowd, and you have to
make an arrest, you're going to
get that kind of allegation. |

cess force used. | think there
was just enough force to make
the arrests and clear them out
of there.�

After the party, students
passed around a petition asking
everyone to sign as witnesses
to the alleged excessive force.

Four days later, city and
university officials met to dis-
cuss how to prevent incidents
like the one on Biltmore Street
from happening again. Officials
say many different plans were
discussed, but no firm propos-
als were made.

ALCOHOL AWARENESS WEEK

ECU students discovered
some basic facts about the use of
alcohol during Alcohol Aware-
ness Week, October 22-29. By
participating in the national cam-
paign, student groups and faculty
committees made students alert
to their responsibilities while us-
ing alcohol and showed students
some alternative ways to enjoy
leisure activities without intoxi-

cating beverages.

The week featured work-
shops, displays, and activities de-
signed to make students aware of
alcohol abuse as well as to inform
them of the stricter laws concern-
ing the product. SADD (Students
Against Drunk Driving) spokes-
man Steve Streeter, a former
UNC football player who was in-

jured in an alcohol related acct:
dent, closed the weeks events

with a lecture on the implications
of alcohol abuse.

The Art Enthusiasts of East Caro-
lina University held its first art auction
on December 5th, 1987 at Gray Gal-
lery. Art auctioneer Fred Kessler pre-
sided over the event, and art consul-
tant Patricia Fuller discussed each
work before it went for bid.

The pieces included in the auction
were presented by students, faculty,
and alumni of ECU. Prominent New
York City artist Cynthia Careson also
contributed works, and private citizens
donated pieces as well.

The art works were auctioned to
~help fund student scholarship, tours of
museums and galleries, and visits with
contemporary artists. The Art Enthu-
siasts also planned to use the pro-
ceeds to develop a series on art col-
lection and conservation.

Spring semester 1988
saw the long awaited opening
of a new 160,000 square foot
general classroom building.
Although the original move
was scheduled for fall of
1987, internal structural modi-
fications delayed the construc-
tion of the 1.5 million dollar
edifice forcing some classes
to be temporarily relocated in
other buildings until the middle
of spring semester.

Now the largest building
on the ECU campus, the gen-
eral classroom building, which
has yet to be named, has
space for 65 classrooms and
laboratories as well as 180
faculty offices. The increased
classroom capacity is expec-
ted to allow the university to
schedule more classes during
the popular 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
class time.

The new addition to the
ECU campus houses the
School of Business, the de-
partment of foreign languages,
the International Affairs and
Honors Program, the BB&T
Institute for Leadership Devel-
opment, and the English de-
partment. In fact, the reloca-
tion finally unites the English
department, the largest de-
partment of campus, in one
structure. Previously, profes-
sors of that area had been
split between Austin building
and Wichard Annex.

The elegant and modern
facade also houses state of
the art technology in the form
of new equipment and learn-
ing aides. Each department re-
quested the furnishing to be
placed in the building in order
to better respond to the stu-
dents needs.

Even with the new outlook and a ton of
confidence, the Pirates faced one of the
nations most challenging schedules.
But the Pirates were ready to give it their
all. So whatever the turnout of the ~87
football season, another chapter would
surely be added to Pirate Football his-
tory.

N. C. STATE

Opening the season at Carter-Fin-
ley Stadium, the Pirates defeated the
Wolfpack 32-14 in front of the largest
crowd ever to witness a football game
in the state. The ECU-N. C. State game
has traditionally become the hottest tick-
ets in North Carolina in the 1980s.

East Carolina enjoyed their opening
success as East Carolina quarterback
Travis Hunter led the Pirate offense.
E.C.U.s offense also had four runners

with more than 50 yards rushing. Full-
back Anthony Simpson led all rushers
with 67 yards on 18 carries. Tailback
Jarrod Moody added 57 yards and two
touchdowns, while third-team fullback
George Franklin also added 57 yards.
Hunter, who ran the Pirate offense effec-
tively throughout the rainy evening, fin-
ished with 53 yards rushing. Not only did
the Pirates play an outstanding game,
but the Pirates gained more yards (295)
than in any game during the 1986 sea-
son, while the defense allowed fewer
yardage (247) than in any game from the
previous year.

FLORIDA STATE

Following a 32-14 win to the N.C.
State Wolfpack, the Pirates returned
home to take on the second-highest
ranked team to ever play in Greenville,

Florida State Seminoles. Coach Baker
was aware of FSUs explosive offense,
because of his assistant coaching job at
FSU in 1984. Unfortunately, East Caroli-
na fell to the eight-ranked Florida State
by a score of 44-3.

Our execution against Florida
State was very poor, and the results
showed on the scoreboard and the stat
sheet. They (FSU) are a powerful foot-
ball team, with a fine as offense as we
will face, and a very hard-hitting de-
fense. But we added to their strengths
by giving up the football far too many
times -Coach Baker.

ILLINOIS

The contest between East Carolina
and the University of Illinois was the first
meeting between two teams, as well it
marked the first time the Pirates faced

a team from the Big Ten. But for the sec-
ond-straight week the East Carolina
Football team fell victim, this time it was
to Illinois, 20-10.

The day was not a total disappoint-
ment though, ECU punter Craig Losito
had one of his better games. The junior
from Jacksonville, N.C., punted five
times for a 44.6 - yard average against
Illinois. Losito punted a 67 yard punt
from his own endzone, a personal re-
cord. In addition, senior linebacker Vin-
son Smith enjoyed one of his finest
games with nine unassisted tackles and
one assist, along with a fumble recovery.

GEORGIA SOUTHERN

Even with record of 1-2 after the
loss at Illinois (20-10), the Pirates were
ready to move onward. And move on-
ward they did, right over Georgia South-
ern with a 16-13 win.

Trailing 10-0 after the first quarter,
the Pirates took their 16-13 lead with
2:38 still remaining. Georgia Southern
had a chance to tie the game with 6 sec-
onds remaining, but Eagle quarterback
Ken Burnette fumbled the snap and the
Pirates held on to even their record at 2-
2.

Pirate fullback Anthony Simpson
had his second straight 100-yard rush-
ing effort against Georgia Southern.
Simpson rushed 21 times for 112 yards
and two touchdowns to lead ECU. Ju-
nior tailback Reggie McKinney had a
successful afternoon with 52 yards
rushing and 126 yards in kickoff returns.
Sophomore wide receiver Walter Wil-
son also caught two key passes for 32
yards on the afternoon.

Coach Baker now stood looking at
the rest of the season and how they
would achieve their one goal. ~~Our goal
from day one this year has been to have
a winning season, and now our backs
are to the wall, Baker said. ~~We have
Temple here next Saturday and then we
go to Southern Mississippi. We have to
pick ourselves up and achieve our goal.

TEMPLE

With only one game to play after
Temple, the dream of obtaining a win-
ning season was alive and well. The East
Carolina Pirates still stood a great
chance of ending with a winning season
after a victory over Temple, by a score

Defensively, senior safety Ellis Dil-
lahunt had his third interception of the
season, while also collecting seven
tackles. Senior linebacker Vinson Smith
led all Pirates with nine tackles and a
fumble recovery.

WEST VIRGINIA

With a 2-2 record after the game
against Georgia Southern, hopes of a
winning season were still in grasp. Un-
fortunately, the 40-0 loss to West Virgin-
ia put those dreams on hold. It was the
Pirates worst defeat in six seasons.

Last years home opener against
West Virginia was a much more thrilling
game. What looked like a second win of
the season, turned into a six second dis-
appointment. The final score against
West Virginia was 24-21.

Unfortunately the game played this
season was plagued by mistakes by the
Pirates that left no hopes of winning.

Now the only thing the Pirates could do
was to put this loss behind and prepare
for the game against Cincinnati.

CINCINNATI

East Carolinas 56-28 win over Cin-
cinnati not only brought back ECUs
pride, but the hope of a winning season
was alive again. The Pirates now stood
with a 3-3 record.

The win against Cincinnati put Pi-
rate history in the making, thanks to
some outstanding athletes. The day was
highlighted by the performance of
Reggie McKinney. The Mt. Olive native
gained 212 yards on 20 carries to notch
the second-highest single game rushing
mark in ECU history. To add to the excit-
ing day, 41-3 victory over the Pirates.
Needless to say the day wasnt a total
loss, at least to Ron Jones. He enjoyed
one of the finest receiving days by a Pi-
rate in 16 seasons when he caught sev-

en passes against Miami.

ECU senior linebacker, Vinson

ten tackles against the Hurricanes, in-
cluding two behind the line of scrim-
mage. Smith also covered two fumbles
and intercepted two passes.

Pirate wide receiver Walter Wilson
enjoyed an outstanding game against
Temple. The sophomore from Baltimore
MD., caught four passes for 108 yards.
Sophomore quarterback for the Pirates
rushed for an even 500 yards against
Cincinnati to record the third highest
rushing day in school history. It was the
second time during the game series be-
tween ECU and Cincinnati that the Pi-
rates have had two different backs score
two touchdowns each in a game, Willie
Lewis and Anthony Simpson.

ECUs backup quarterback, Charlie
Libretto seemed to be at his best against
Cincinnati. The sophomore led ECU
quickly downfield, completing three-of-
four passes for 62 yards to set up Chuck
Berleths 29-yard field goal. Junior full-
back Tim James also scored his first
touchdown in the Cincinnati game.

VIRGINIA TECH

October the 17th stood as a remind-
er to the Pirates of what they were capa-
ble of doing. East Carolinas 32-23 win
over Virginia Tech, was the Pirates first
win outside the state of North Carolina
since the last game of the 1983 season.

Pirate quarterback Travis Hunter
set a school record for single-game total
offense against Virginia Tech as he ac-
counted for 313 yards. The sophomore
from Winter Garden, Fla., passed for 228
yards and rushed for 85 yards and three
touchdowns to lead the Pirates to vic-
tory.

One of the biggest plays in seasons,
came with the win over Virginia Tech.
ECU faced a second and long situation
from its own 26-yard-line when Travis
Hunter connected with fullback Tim
James on a screen pass that turned into
a 74-yard touchdown.

SOUTH CAROLINA

Hopes of the winning season were
still reachable after a 34-12 loss at South
Carolina. East Carolinas record was
now 4-4.

The play of the day came from
sophomore cornerback Junior Robin-
son. Late in the second half, USC quar-
terback Todd Ellis attemped a 25-yard
pass that was picked off by Robinson.

SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI

This was the last game and the last
to decide. Would this be the Pirates year
for a winning season or would it be an-
Other year of defeat. The hopes of a win-
ning season depended all on the out-
come of this game against Southern
Mississippi. The Pirates knew the goal
Was attainable. Last year when playing
Southern Mississippi the Pirates only

loss by a score of 23-21.

It looked as if ECUs dream would
come true after a Libretto sparked a 80-
yard scoring drive. Passes consisting of
26 and 15 yards to Tony Smith and a 17-
yard toss to Jarrod Moody carried the
ball closer to a touchdown. Then with
1:30 remaining in the game, Libretto
passed Smith a touchdown.

scoreboard reading 38-34. The promis-
ing situation of a winning season, soon
faded when Southern Mississippi man-
aged to recover an ECU kick and retain
ontrol of the ball till time ran out. Much
to everyones disappointment, Southern
Mississippi left the Pirates just ONE
SHORT.

HOMECOMING
TRADITION

As the Pirates celebrated
Homecoming 1987 students,
alumni, faculty and friends en-
joyed several successful activi-
ties.

Alumni returning to their

alma mater turned out in record
numbers for the alumni open
house at the alumni center.

The Fixx performed Thurs-

day night in Minges coliseum to
an enthusiastic crowd. The one
and a half hour concert rocked
the crowd with old favorites as
well as with tunes not yet re-
leased. Greenvilles own rock
band, the Usuals, opened the
show.

A parade through down-

town Greenville kicked off Sat- .

urdays festivities. The school
of education took first place in
the float competition, followed
by the school of home econom-
ics with second place and
Sigma Phi Epsilon in third

} place.

The football team was vic-
torious over the University of
Cincinnati 56-28. During half-
time, the lovely Kimberly Hines,
a sophomore from Rocky
Mount, NC was crowned Miss
ECU. Miss Hines also has the
distinction of being the repre-
sentative of

The ECU Gospel Choir cho-
sen to wear the crown for the
second year in a row. Tonja
Howell-Jolly, the 1986 queen
and also a Gospel Choir repre-
sentative, returned to her alma
mater to pass on her crown.

Also at halftime, Chancellor
Richard R. Eakin presented
three Outstanding Alumni
Awards to Kay Yow, Dudley
Flood, and Alice Ester.

Homecoming is a time for

year was no exception. There
were plenty of parties and other
activities for everyone to enjoy.

A concert by the Chairmen
of the Board closed out the
weekend by performing beach
music on the mall on a beautiful
Sunday afternoon.

The ECU soccer team had seen bet-
ter seasons, but their victories included
wins over Virginia Wesleyan, St. An-
drews, and Greensboro College for their
1987 fall season. The Pirates ended with
one of their worst seasons in recent his-
tory with a 3-13 record.

First year coach Charlie Harvey said
that there were signs of improvement
and encouragement throughout the sea-
son. With their first year together under
their belt, Coach Havey and the team felt
optimistic about the 1988 season.
Knowing that the top four scorers are re-
turning for next year ought to do it!! In-
cluded in that foursome is top scorer
Robert Larrison of Raleigh. Also, thirty-
three out of forty players will be return-
ing in the fall to contribute their skills to
possibly make it a victorious season.

It started out to be a good
season for the Lady Pirate Vol-
leyballers with an 8-6 record,
but from thereon the season
seemed to be on a down slide.
The final record for the season
was 9-19 and 0-5 in the Colo-
nial Athletic Association. The
last fifteen games of the season
were dropped.

lady netters turned out to be
victorious, however, when they
competed with UNC - Wilming-
ton. The final score of the game
was 3-2, and even though it
was considered to be one of
the most important games of
the season, it did not count in
the Colonial standings. Top
players of the volleyball team in-
clude Debbie Tate, Kris McKay,
Jemma Holley, and Michelle
Mcintosh. Tate, McKay and
McIntosh will return next year
to make it a winning season!

MENS TEAM

The East Carolina mens
track is a small, close-knit unit.
Never mind the distance or field
events, the Pirates compete
only in the sprints.

Yet the Pirates have pieced
together one of the most im-
pressive streaks in ECU athletic
history " 10 consecutive ap-
pearances in the NCAA cham-
pionships.

To get to the NCAAs, ECU
sprinters must produce times
during the year that are equal
or better than national stan-
dards.

Senior Lee Vernon McNeill
is the leader of the pack. !n the
summer of 1987 McNeill took
home gold medals at the United
States Olympic Festival, the Pan
American Games and the World
Championships as part of the 4
x 100-meter relay team that in-
cluded Carl Lewis.

McNeill overcame nagging
injuries in 1988 to qualify for the
NCAA 100-meters, and lead the
Pirate 4 x 100-meter relay team
that also qualified.

But Lee wasnt the only
McNeill that made noise in the
spring of 88. Brother Eugene
was also part of the relay team
and qualified himself for the
200-meters.

Veteran coach Bill Carson
teamed speedy Kelvin Wrighton,
Junior Robinson and Ike Robin-
son with the McNeills to form
the 4 x 100-meter relay team.
That relay team was impressive
in a first-place finish at the
IC4As at Yale in May.

For Lee McNeill, the
NCAAs were the beginning of a

ted in July to qualify for the
United States Olympic team in
Indianapolis.

Senior sprinter Sonya Bal-
dwin broke her own school re-
cord in the 100 - meters and the
East Carolina womens track
team put together one of its fin-
est seasons ever the spring of
1988.

Baldwin, a Lumberton
senior, ran the 100 - meters in
mid-April in 11.83 seconds,
snapping the old school record
she tied one year ago. Baldwin
also anchored the 4 x 100 and
4 x 400 - meter relay teams.

Sophomore Vanessa Smith
also pieced together a produc-
tive spring, placing high in sev-
eral meets in the 200 - and 400
- meters while running as part
of the relay teams.

At the prestigious Penn Re-
lays, the Lady Pirates perform-
ed better than any ECU wom-
ens track team in school histo-

vakian National team. The
Bucs were out-rebounded by
an incredible 47-21 margin by
the Czechs but ECU stayed in
the game by forcing 24 turnov-
ers, including 16 steals and a
school record performance by
cat-quick freshman Jimmy Hin-
ton, collecting eight steals,
four assist, and nine points,
while fellow freshman Stanley
Love led the Pirates in scoring
with 17 points. The Pirates
used their quickness and hus-
tle to almost upset the taller
Czechs before bowing 82-76.
ECU opened the regular
season at home with a 65-57
victory over Longwood College
before suffering a 94-45 loss
to nationally ranked Duke Uni-

versity.
Not only was this Pirate
team inexperienced but also at

American to win on the road be-
fore returning home to get
caught in the web of the Rich-
mond Spiders.

East Carolina breezed to a
77-57 non-conference win over
Atlantic Christian College in
Minges. Reed Loose led the Pi-
rates in scoring with 22 points,
while Gus Hill fired in 19 in that

contest.

The 1987-88 team lost the
last two games of the season to
William and Mary 88-62 and
UNC Wilmington.

Gus Hill was the leading
scorer for the season averaging
19.3 points and 5.5 rebounds,
followed by Reed Loose with 15
points and 3.8 rebounds.

The Pirates hope to turn
things around next year with the
entire team returning and a
good recruiting year.

Pirates on the Rebound !

Nothing great is
ever accomplished
without enthusiasm�

states a plaque in ECUs new
basketball coach, Mike Steeles
Office. ~~Enthusiasm is, shall we
say, the new Pirate Coachs
motto. Coach Mike Steele is
East Carolinas seventeenth
head basketball coach. Steele
was previously head coach of
nationally ranked De Paul Uni-
versity.

While at De Paul, Steele
turned a troubled basketball
program, which had a 5-20 rec-
ord one year before Steele took
over, to a program that had the
highest amount of wins in De
Pauls history. Steele took De
Paul all the way to the NCAA fi-
nals, all within six years.

His hopes are to turn the
Pirates into a team that is as
competitive as possible. Hav-
ing good competition in each
game, creates a ~team that the
students and the community

can be proud of.

Steele says that ~~when a
team plays with enthusiasm, the
fans become more interested
and enthusiastic, with support
for the home team. He says
with that, ~~the wins will come in
time.� For example,� he says,
a mere 50 people would show
up when he started coaching
at De Paul, ~~then at the end of
six years, the games were sold
out!�

With ~Enthusiasm, he
hopes that ~~the students will
look forward to the event.�
Once this is accomplished, he
hopes this will start a tradition.

For four years Steele
played varsity basketball for
Purdue University. He started
his Junior year, and he served
as team captain his final sea-
son

Through his knowledge and
experience in the game, he
feels that, ~~the best thing about
being a coach is | can appreci-
ate what the players are going
through.�

.

Although Steele feels that ~
athletics are a good learning | &
device where people learn how
to obey rules and regulations, 7*
and learn a sense of responsi-
bility, he also feels that ~~too
much time is focused on athlet-
ics. Steele feels people need
to be involved in other activities
as well. Steele places ~~lots of
emphasis on a degree, but he
likes to ~~get them to participate
in other activities. For example,
Steele was recently a chairper-
son for the Special Olympics,
and most of his players got in-
volved by helping out with the
events and athletes. j

In his ~free time off the i
court, he likes to spend time 7 |
with his family. He has a won- if
derful, supportive wife who is
involved with athletics also, and
two sons, Drew who is two, and
Derek who is 5. | ¥

golf, raquetball, and of course ~&

The Lady Pirates, under the
direction of first year head
coach Pat Pierson started off
good while struggling with a

tough early schedule.
The ladies went on to lose

their last nine games and end
up 8-20 for the season and 2-10
in the conference. Despite the
disappointments, the team end-
ed up tied for sixth place in the
seven team league.

First round conference
tournament action handed the
Lady Pirates a 81-71 defeat to
George Mason.

Alma Bethea, the only sen-
ior on the team was the leading

scorer averaging 13.4 points

and 8.7 rebounds. Bethea fin-
ished her career the fifth all
time leading scorer in school
history with more than 1100
points.

The second leading scorer
turned out to be Gretta Savage
averaging 10.7 points and 5.7
rebounds.

Head coach Pat Pierson
hopes the future will be brighter
for the Lady Pirates with the en-
tire team returning except Alma
Bethea. The ladies hope to
have a good recruiting year and
looks forward to the help of
North Carolina Central Univer-
sity six-foot transferee Kim Du-
pree.

best-kept secrets is in danger of
getting out. People are starting to
figure out that the East Carolina
golf team is on the verge of being
a dynasty on the conference
links.

For years prior to coach Hal
Morrison arriving on the East
Carolina campus in 1986, the
mens golf program slumbered
through several springs as an av-
erage to good team. Under Morri-
son's recruiting and guidance, the
Pirate linksters won their second
consecutive Colonial Athletic As-
sociation golf championship in
1988.

The Pirates spent most of
the spring in the company of
strong golf teams, competing
with the top golf programs in the
southeast. With four, sometimes
five freshmen on the tee, ECU
played in prestigious tournaments
such as the Iron Duke Classic
and Tar Heel Invitational.

The youth-laden Pirates fin-
ished, for the most part, in the
middle of the pack.

As the season progressed,
so did the Pirates. Morrison re-
cruited freshman and sopho-
mores, along with lone senior
Chris Riley, made great strides.
By the Colonial Championships,
ECU peaked, and came from be-
hind in the last round to capture
its second title in as many years.

Freshman Francis Vaughnm,
Jeff Craig, Simon Moye, walk-on
Tee Davies, and sophomores
John Chapman and Paul Garcia
played major roles, along with
junior Mark Hidlay and Riley.

est lineups in school history, the
East Carolina baseball team rolled
to an impressive 33-14 record in
1988 " the fourth-best won-loss
mark ever by an ECU team.

The Pirates, with two fresh-
men, three sophomores and just
one senior in the starting lineup, won
18 out of 21 games in the last half
of the season and finished tied for
second in the competitive Colonial
Athletic Association.

The East Carolina womens
Softball team, armed with a trio
Of blazing pitchers, were like a
gang of gunfighters in the ol
west, just looking for a game.

Anyone, anytime, anyplace.

The Lady Pirates took on
North Carolina and Virginia out
Of the strong Atlantic Coast
Conference " and won. They
Challenged Ohio State from the
Big Ten " and won. They trav-
�,�led south through Georgia and
Florida, hardly the path for a
gunfight, yet ECU returned to
Greenville with seven wins in
nine games.

East Carolina finished the
year 25-16-1 after taking on the
toughest schedule in school his-
tory. Seventh-year head coach
Sue Manahan picked up her
200th career win along the way.

The 1988 season was a
year of streaks for ECU. Like
the seven-game streak of victo-
Nes that began the season, and
the 10 wins in 11 games that
©ccurred in mid-year. There
was also five consecutive wins
in the UNC-Wilmington Tourna-
Ment that earned first place and
a trophy, to boot.

and finished a respectable
third in the well-represented
University of Virginia Tourna-
ment.

Unlike most of the athletic
teams at ECU, the womens
SOftball team is without a
Place to call home. The Colo-
Nal Athletic Association does
NOt hold competition in soft-
ball, only four CAA teams field
Clubs in softball, and ECU de-
feated two of them George

For the East Carolina mens
tennis team, the 1987-88 sea-
SOn must have seemed a bit
Strange.

After all, its home matches
Were played off campus for the
first time in years. Also, while
the tennis season is based in
the spring, the conference
Championships are held in the
fall. On top of that, the Pirates
Jained a new head coach soon
after the completion of the sea-
Son.

The Pirate netters, howev-
©r, Won eight consecutive
Matches during one stretch and
cruised to a fine 10-6 record
during the spring (17-7 overall).

U dropped its first four
Matches, then pieced together a
String of impressive victories :
Over Coastal Carolina, UNC-Wil-

Mington and a strong Guilford
team.

In the final weekend of the
S�,�ason in April, the Pirates fin-

Place in the Azalea Festival

East Carolinas womens
tennis team won five straight
Matches in mid-season, secur-
Ng a winning record for the
Spring of 1988. The Lady Pi-
fates finished 6-5 in the spring
and in seventh place in the
Colonial Athletic Association.

After a season-opening
loss at UNC-Wilmington, ECU
defeated Atlantic Christian,

hristopher-Newport, Long-
Wood, Appalachian State and
the College of Wooster in order.
ECU added a victory on the
road at Meredith later in the
SPring to secure the above-.500
Spring.
_ _ At the CAA Championships
IN Richmond, Jill Hobson and
Joey Millard each came away
with a victory, as did the
doubles team of Susan Mat-
locks and Holly Murray.

At the conclusion of the
1988 season, Bill Moore was
Nired as the new coach of the
Mens and womens tennis pro-
grams at ECU. Moore comes to

sistant at the University of
Virginia.

INTRAMURALS

East Carolinas Department of
Intramural-Recreational Ser-
vices has filled the gap in the
lifes of thousands of students,
faculty and staff. Offering recre-
ational opportunities limited only
by the imagination, Intramural-
Recreational Services provides
competitive events, fitness ori-
ented activities as well as out-
door recreation adventures. The
saying ~~Where Fun is #1� is in-
: deed a reality for East Carolin-

| ians involved in the program.

Intramural-Recreational Ser-
vices offers students, faculty an
staff programs and services in-
cluding intramural sports, club
sports, informal recreation, aer-
obic/fitness classes, physical fit-
ness activities, equipment
check-out services, and outdoor
recreation equipment rentals
and trips. The 1987-88 calendar
of events was filled with an ar-
ray of exciting, action packed,
fun-filled recreational opportuni-
ties.

The fall Physical Fitness Pro-
gram provided fitness enthu-
siasts with a variety of classes
geared toward body mainte-
nance. Aerobic fitness classes
continue to be the most popular
segment of the program with
approximately 20 classes of-
fered each semester. Toning
and aquarobics classes were
also added to the calendar as
well as low impact aerobics.

Approximately fifty percent of
the student population takes
part in the Informal Recreation
Program. Whether shooting
baskets in Memorial Gymnasi-
um or sweating bullets in one of
the three newly renovated
weight rooms, East Carolinians
know the meaning of ~~work that
body.

Another popular program devel-
oped by Intramural-Recreational
Services is the Outdoor Recrea-
tion Program. Outdoor persons
take advantage of the three-fold
service including equipment
rental, the outdoor recreation
information center and sched-
uled outdoor adventure trips.
Highlighting the 1987-88 calen-
dar of outdoor events was a
windsurfing/hand gliding trip to
Kitty Hawk, N.C. canoe,
backpacking, sailing, kayaking
and skiing adventure trips were
also on tap for faculty, staff and
students during the year. The
Outdoor Recreation Center
opened its door on a daily basis
in an effort to provide East Car-
olinians a more comprehensive
outdoor adventure package.

The Intramural Club Sport Pro-
gram has proven to be one of
the most successful programs
of its kind in the nation and
1987-88 was no different. Club
Sports offer faculty, staff and
students over fifteen organized
activities designed for recrea-
tional enjoyment, educational
fulfillment and competitive ac-
tion. The Fall 1987 Club Sport
schedule was filled with champi-
onship style play for all squads
involved. |

Once again, ECU Rugby
showed its stripes attaining a
second place in the state cham-
pionship over UNC-G. Their
schedule included top names
such as Duke, N.C., and Wake
Forest. Other powerful scrum-

Maintained their unblemished
Championship record by defeat-
INg top notch squads from
UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Wilming-
ton, Appalachian State, Duke
and Wake Forest. They cap-
tured yet another Ultimax title
SOaring way with an undefeated
11-0 fall record.

Paddling, lacrosse, karate and
ice hockey enjoyed successful
fall schedules as well. Each
club, organized and developed
by students of East Carolina are
an integral part of the Depart-
ment of Intramural-Recreational
Services.
