fter six hours of hard drivil#e

had finally reached the E

But I wasnTt quite sure how to get iy?
the campus from here. I mean I E:
hadnTt actually driven this road
myself, but I had been this way
before with friends. Besides, how
hard could it be? Needless to say
within ten minutes I realized that
none of the streets looked familiat-
was beginning to think maybe the |
city planner had moved the camp
without telling me. I was near pati
until I spotted the sign ECU :

exuberation swept over me feeling
like I had just won the Publishers
Clearing House Sweepstakes or
something. But the exuberation

dumbfoundedly. Parking fee, of

outrageous,? I said, ~my car isnTt
worth four times that.? Reluctant!

College Hill was a delightful sigh

for these weary bones. I found a

probably getting his car towed
because he forgot to get a parking
sticker, I chuckled to myself. But I
__~ was astonished to see my car being
~~ hitched to the tow truck. I rushed
over to the car, but before I could
_ utter a sound a policeman shoved a
parking ticket into my hand and
feverishly began writing another one.
~This your car??? he mumbled
between scribbles. Yes, it is,? I
exclaimed, ~~whatTs this ticket for??
No parking sticker.? But...? I
began then stopped in mid-breath as
I stared wide-eyed at my missing
/ parking sticker and the missing
) bumper it was attached to. Not to
7) mention the vacant right rear tire,
three hubcaps, the front seat, anda
pair of well-worn windshield wipers.
The police officer tore the ticket from
his black book and handed it to me.
WhatTs this one for,? I asked.
Littering.? Then the tow truck
zoomed out of sight with my car
leaving a $50.00 towing bill flying in
the dust. I stood at the roadside
Staring at the empty parking space
while my meager savings slowly
dwendled into obscurity. Then I
turned and headed back to my room,
hoping Dad would be home when I
called, and leaving my venture to the
Student bookstore for another day.

Into the

NIGHT

sit on the brick ledge of the
sidewalk rummaging
through my bookpack
looking for loose change. Out of
the corner of my eye I notice an
attractive blonde leaving Joyner
library. Her arms wrapped
around a cumbersome supply of
books. A few paces fall between
us, and I follow her out into the
dark forboding night. Down the
steps and to the right she walks
calmly toward the Flanagan
building. The air is deathly still,
and ominious clouds block out
the meager light from the moon.
ItTs late. Few people are out.
Two spotlights nestled among
the bushes cast our distorted
shadows across the library wall.
She notices my presence and the
click, click, click of her high-
heeled shoes grows rapid as we
approach the chemistry
building. She stares straight
ahead with her arms hugging
the books and herself. I slowly
close the distance between us,
and she shivers. Clutching the
books even tighter; anxiously
searching for help. The echo of
our footsteps fills the silence as
we continue along the narrow
passageway. As my booksack
brushes against the wire fence of
the dimly lit construction zone,
her body tenses. She seems
ready to scream, but doesnTt.
She sees a blue-light phone, but
hopes I wonTt bother her. One-

Austin .... We pass Brewster
building and she seeks entrance.

increases to the point of
bursting . A startled gasp
escapes her delicate white
throat as she hears the rustle of
my nylon jacket. She attempts a
break for freedom, but I reach
out and grab her by the
shoulder. Her books plunge to
the ground. An earsplitting
scream tears through the night.
Her eyes are dazed and wild like
a doomed animal. Hysterically,
she tries to scratch out my eyes,
but my grip on her wrists is
solid. I wonTt hurt you,? I tell
her. She grunts with a last ditch
effort to escape. Then, as if she
were turned to stone, she sees
the emblem on my jacket. You
...but...I... thought...? she
gasps. As I reach inside my
Jacket she pleads, DonTt hurt
me. Pleeasse, pleeasse donTt
...? I withdraw the object I was
searching for and slowly hand it
to her. She takes it and looks at
it disbelievingly . . .

Reagan Battles Cancer

During a routine examination
on July 19, a large cancerous
growth was discovered in
President ReaganTs lower
intestines. By July 22, he was
placed in Bethesda Naval
Hospital to undergo surgery to
remove the growth. After three
hours of surgery, doctors
reported that they had removed
all of the cancer and determined
that it was not malignant.

While Reagan spent the next
few weeks recuporating, his wife
Nancy took over the care of the
president and managed his
schedule. Chief of staff Donald
Regan was the only visitor
Nancy allowed during ReaganTs
hospital stay. Nancy postponed
all but two of President
ReaganTs meetings alloted for
the next few weeks, but she
maintained some scheduled
appearances planned for both
she and Reagan.

Within weeks Reagan was
back at the White House.



The Return of a Legend

The Coca-Cola CompanyTs
attempt to promote its New
Coke was stunted by the public
pressure to return the original
Coke. In April of 1985 the new
formulated cola was introduced
to replace the old Coke. The
switch to the sweeter, less fizzy
version was considered by
company executives as the

faltered when old Coke drinkers

An Unforgettable Nightmare

Ceremonies were held at
various times during the year at
the Vietnam Memorial in
Washington, D.C. to
commemorate the tenth
anniversary of the fall of the
Saigon government in Vietnam.
The memorial is inscribed with
the names of more than 58,000
dead or missing soldiers from
the Vietnam war. The names
are listed chronologically in
the order they were taken from
us.? The first name is of an
advisor killed in 1959 while
watching a movie near Saigon,
the last name is of a young
soldier killed in May 1975
during a rescue attempt of the
freighter Mayague.

The 250 ft. memorial is made
of polished black granite,
quarried near Bangalore, India.
The granite was chosen to bear
the names because of its highly
reflective quality.

MOVE DoesnTt Budge

An entire city block was
destroyed in Philadelphia when
police tried to evict members of
the radical group, MOVE, from
their fortified rowhouse. A
helicopter dropped a small
bomb on the building which
started a fire. Eleven members
of the cult were killed, four of
which were children. The fire
spread throughout the block
destroying 61 houses and
leaving 280 people homeless.

MOVE, a Philadelphia
centered cult, preaches a blend
of primitivism and anarchy.
Leader Conrad Africa resisted
police action and demanded the
release of nine MOVE members
who were convicted for the
murder of a policeman during a
1978 shoot-out.

Police attempted to use tear
gas to remove the group who
responded with gunshots and
automatic weapons. A 90-
minute shoot-out erupted
exhausting much of the police
amunition and plans of attack.
The decision was then made to
drop explosives on the building.
Within 20 minutes flames be-
gan to appear, but the fire de-
partment did not respond until
40 minutes later. The
confrontation between the
Philadelphia police and the cult
raised serious questions about
the performance of city
officials.

Retaliation Against Apartheid

Arrests, a death toll, and
counter demonstrations
mounted steadily during the
first of August. Riots were an
almost daily occurrence in
South Africa as blacks protested
Apartheid laws. These laws
define where black South
Africans can live, limits the
civil liberties of the black
majority, restricts black South
Africans voting rights and the
right to own property in the
countryTs major white urban
cities. With only a few
exceptions, racial segregation
thrives in public places such as
buses, trains, schools, and
hospitals. This segregation is
rigidly enforced by police and
the passbook system.

gathering set the tone for ECUTs
first Club Awareness Day,
sponsored by the combined
efforts of the Student
Government Association and
the Student Union. Club
Awareness Day became an
extension of the SGATs 1985
summer NSICO (New Student
Initiation to Campus
Organizations) program. SGA
President, David Brown, felt
that since the new students

learned so much about ECUTs
campus organizations during
summer orientation, he decided
to give all the students of ECU
the same opportunity.

The day was beneficial to
students as well as to the
organizations. Students became
aware of ECUTs extra-curricular
activities, and clubs were able to
promote membership
enlistment and to announce
scheduled events. Mark

this is something that all

passengers on a Mediterranean
cruise were held hostage for two
days by a PLO team of four
armed men Oct 8.

After taking the liner 12 miles
off the Syrian Coast and de-
manding the release of 50
prisoners held in Egypt, the four
PLO hyackers surrendered the
liner and passengers to Egyptian
officials in return for a safe
passage out of Egypt to Tunisia.
On board a getaway plane pro-
vided, the hijackersT attempt to
fell the attack and murder of an
American civilian was abated,
as U.S. fighter planes forced
Egypt Air down at a NATO base
in Sicily.

The hijackers were arrested in
Sicily to stand trial amidst a
political rhubard and the release
of Mohammed Abbas, PLO
leader.

New Classroom Building
Construction began this fall
on ECUTs new classroom
building. Over the summer, the
trees behind Rawl and Graham
buildings were cut to make way
for the construction crew.
Chancellor Howell commented
that since ECU has not hada
major addition to the main

campus in several years, the
new building will be a great
asset for ECUTs expanding
student body and faculty.
This building is very well
designed with state-of-the-art
facilities for the units that are
going to be in there,? said
Howell, . . . it will have the
kinds of amphitheater
classrooms that the School of
Business wants and the type of

laboratories that the foreign

building will have 65 classrooms
and labs and 180 faculty offices.

Scheduled completion of the
building is August 1987, and it is

received a new image during th¢
1985-86 academic year. Plans
to renovate the auditorium
went into effect in September 0

and $3 million will transform
the Wright Building into a

bathroom facilities and an
elevator tower. The project was
created for the purpose of

Art Professor Dies

During ECUTs Thanksgiving
break, 63-year-old professor
Wesley V. Crawley died at Laké
Gaston near Littleton, N.C.
Crawley taught art at ECU for
26 years, during which time he
established the Southern
Sculpture Association. Mr.
Tran Gordly, a fellow teacher
and good friend of CrawleyTs,
reflected, If there is one thing !
could say in CrawleyTs memory:
it would have to be that he was 4
caring human being and that hé
was truly interested in helping

First Civilian/Teacher to Study
Space/First-Hand

37-year-old Christa
McAuliffe was selected as the
first civilian to join the NASA
astronauts on a flight aboard the
space shuttle. McAuliffe was
chosen from among hundreds of
applicants for the Challenger
voyage set for February.
McAuliffe, a mother of two
children, underwent the
extensive astronaut training and
passed with flying colors. Her
main role on the journey woul

North Carolinians cringe at
the prospect of having
hazardous waste dump sites
built in their backyard.? Even
though four dump sites have
been proposed in North
Carolina residents are already
on the defense. Why is N.C.
being bombarded with waste
applications?? asked an angry
Bladen County resident. Does
the commercial waste industry
think weTre easy prey?? The
state is considered a leading
candidate to provide a burial
ground for low-level radioactive
waste because according to
officials it is centrally located
and a leading waste generator
among the states. A decision by
the South Eastern Compact is
expected by July and many say
a N.C. site could be selected.

The Chicago Bears triumphed
over the New England Patriots
with an overwhelming victory
of 46-10. The Super Bowl XX
win marked win number 18 out
of 19 games for the Bears.

Voyager Reveals the Secrets of
Uranus

The unmanned spacecraft,
Voyager 2, sent revealing
photographs of Uranus as it
swept past the planet traveling
at 50,679 mph. Voyager
discovered that Uranus has a
total of 15 moons, its diameter
is four times that of earth, and
that it is encircled by rings.

A Disastrous Fate for the Space
Shuttle Challenger

The Space Shuttle Challenger
was launched from Cape
Canaveral after a three day
delay caused by icy weather and
technical problems, only never
to return. Seventy-four seconds
after lift off, there was an
enormous explosion producing
a bright, orange flame and black
smoke. A cheering crowd fell
suddenly silent after watching
the ShuttleTs two solid-fuel
rocket boosters sail off in
different directions.

There were no survivors from
the NASA disaster. Aboard the
Challenger were seven
astronauts who tried ~~to touch
the face of God? commented

President Reagan. They
included Ellison Onizuka,
Christa McAuliffe, Gregory
Jarvis, Judith Resnik, Michael
Smith, Frances (Dick) Scobee,
and Ronald McNair.

The 100 ton, $1.2 billion
shuttle was powered by 500,000
gallons of liquid hydrogen and
oxygen. Moments before the
explosion, a bright flash
appeared from the external fuel
tank. A leak in one of
ChallengerTs tanks which
allowed the hydrogen and
oxygen fuel to mix was the
cause of the shuttle disaster
according to NASA officials.

Tutu Visits Duke

More than 1,000 people
packed the Duke University
chapel to hear Bishop Desmond
Tutu deliver a Sunday sermon
on February 19. The Nobel
Laureate and critic of the
apartheid policies of the South
African government spoke at
Duke University in order to
raise the awareness of North
Carolinians regarding South
AfricaTs politics and to raise
money for the South African

POW Flag Salutes MIATs

ECUTs first annual Veterans
Awareness Day was held in
March. The event was
sponsored by the ECU Veterans
Club in order to show ECU
students what the club offered
and the ideals the members
represent. A POW flag was
raised at Joyner Library in
honor of those soldiers still
missing in action. ECU is the
first educational institution to
ever fly the POW flag.

USA Strikes Back

On the morning of March 24
Libyan forces fired two SAM-5
missiles from Sirte at U.S.
planes flying off the coast of
Libya. The U.S. did not
respond. Hours later three more
SAM-STs were fired at the U.S.
jets. This time the U.S. used
air-to-ship missiles to sink two
of LibyaTs high speed, missile
Carrying patrol boats and two
U.S. jets knocked out a missile
base in Sirte. The incident came
in response to the Libyan-linked



terrorists bombings of airports
in Rome and Vienna on -
December 27 in which 20
people were killed, including an
11-year-old girl and four USA
citizens. By January 11
President Reagan had ordered
all USA citizens to leave Libya
which enabled the U:S. to
untie our hands with regard to
whatever action might be
necessary in the future,? said
Reagan. Reagan gave the go-
ahead March 14 for the right-
of-navigation maneuvers? that
led to the confrontation.

Split Tickets Revealed in Tight
Race

One of the closest SGA
executive elections in ECU
history revealed split ticket
winners. Presidential candidate,
Steve Cunanan, edged a victory
over SGA vice president Chris
Tomasic by 13 votes while
TomasicTs running mate,
Anthony Jackson, received 49
more votes than opponent
Gordan Walker to obtain the
position of vice president.

he said. During the campaign,
Cunanan stressed his motto of
student interests, not special
interests? in that the students of
ECU should always come first.
Jackson also expressed his

responsible student
government.

Treasurer-elect, John Eagan,
and secretary-elect, David
Tambling ran unopposed for
their positions. Eagan and
Tambling offered their
experience with serving in the
SGA legislature to the positions
on the executive board. Said
Eagan about the elections, ITm
pleased with the outcome. I
think the best candidates won
and I feel like we can and will
work well together.?

After the race, Cunanan and
Jackson spoke of mending
broken fences created during
the campaign and beginning the
duties of SGA executives.

Fire Erupts at Jenkins

Ear piercing alarms and
screaming fire trucks awoke the
UniversityTs west campus at
8:00 a.m. on Thursday 29. The
Greenville Fire Department
responded to the fire alarm at
the Jenkins Art Building to find
a fire burning in room 103.
According to Assistant Chief
Don Mills the first floor fire was
believed to be caused by a hot
plate heating element that had
been turned on and left
unattended. Damage to the
room was minimal and some
equipment was damaged.
Evacuation of the building was
conducted immediately and no
incidents of injury occurred.

ECU " History in the Making

It is 75-years-old. It was born
on a tobacco field in a rural
town of Pitt County. And since
its conception it has changed its
name three times. The facts,

Stock Watching Pays Off

The task is tedious, time-
consuming and tense, but for
ECU graduate student Rick
Spencer the patience paid off.
Spencer placed sixty-first
among the top 100 of the
BarronTs Magazine stock
watching contest winners.
Participants chose and watched
5 to 10 stocks with values from
5 to 20 percents for a six-month
period. At the end of the
allotted contest time, the parti-
cipant with the highest percent
return at the closing date won

the contest. Spencer ended with
a 31.97 percent return. Spencer
attributed his success to
research and three years of
stock watching experience. He
admitted there was an element
of luck involved in receiving
good returns. Fortunately,
Spencer stated, none of his
stocks went down the tubes.

Meltodwn at Chernoble

On April 28, a meltdown
occurred at the Chernoble
nuclear ae station located
North of Kiev in Ukrain, a part
of the Soviet Union. High levels
of radiation, carried by SE
winds from the Soviet Union to
Scandinavia, were detected by
Swedish monitors. Soviet
officials reported 2 people were
killed, 197 injured with 18 in
critical condition. However,
U.S. government officials
suspected that the explosion
and radiation fire killed
hundreds or thousands of
people. The Soviet Union had
to evacuate tens of thousands of
people.

Baby

ine months of waiting, hoping

and struggling are condensed in-
to the two hour musical-comedy,
Baby. A college town serves as the
backdrop for three prototypical
couples as they progress through nine
months to parenthood. The youngest
couple, the undergraduates, find
parenthood easier to commit to than
marriage. The eldest couple copes
with the arrival of an unexpected
baby now that their three children
have grown. Infertility plagues the
middle coupleTs desire to have a
baby. Baby, written by David Shire,
Sybille Pearson, and Richard Maltby,
blends the uncertainties, frustrations
and hopes that accompany having a
child.

Dance Theatre

City. The time " the present.
The curtain opens on a morning of
dance classes and auditions, and a day
in the life of performers is revealed as
dancers diligently prepare for the up-
coming auditions. After viewing an
Afro-American dance, a_ snake
charmer, a tap dance trio and several
other special acts, the director selects
the best performers to star in various
productions. Intense and demanding
rehearsals begin as the afternoon ar-
rives where tunes are learned, steps are
memorized and _ practice becomes
perfection. The Dance Theatre ap-
propriately closes its production with
an evening preview performance. A
ballet entourage displays grace and
elegance while performing the Romeo
and Juliet balcony scene, then a
modern dance 1s choreographed using
oversized silver pillows and the grand
finale concludes with a high stepping
song and dance number from the
musical, 42nd Street.
