Description
Staff members of the Wilmington Daily Record, an African American newspaper in Wilmington, N.C., during the late 19th century, standing in front of the building that housed their office. Alex Manly was editor of the newspaper until 1898, when he was forced to flee the city on the eve of the 1898 Wilmington Massacre after they were targeted due to their publication of an editorial which enraged violent white supremacists. The office of the Daily Record was sacked and burned as about 60 individuals, mostly black, lost their lives in the following violence while the local Republican government overthrown by the white supremacist dominated Democratic one.
