YARD WIDE,

To Break South.
Raleigh Chronicle.
A number of wealthy gentlemen,
of Birmingham, Ala., made by
Protection, hare recently paid s
visit to President-elect Harrison
and requested him to appoint good
men to office in South and as-
him of their belief in
If he will encourage the
Protective sentiment in South,
so they say, a new political party
will be which will break
the solid South. These millionaire-
so called, agree to be
the organizers of a new political par-
They offer to sell them-
selves and ask others to join them.
This is not first tune that
propositions have been made. Every
now and then some man who wants
notoriety or protection advertises
that is ready to sell out
for a few offices. Such men do not
represent sentiment of
of the as they always
in election years.
When these ion advocates
in the South talk about starting a
new party it reminds us of boy
who was angry. Some of bis play-
mates had a party and bad

These millionaire Protectionists
have organized a party and to it
none will except themselves.
They will have about as lonesome
a time as set of men ever bad.
As Chronicle has often said
South is not solid
outside influence or desire. It is
solid necessity. It is as much
a social as a political question. Just
so long .-. there is in our
condition and environments, just as
Ion-; will the South remain solid,
all this talk about new parties will
lie merely bosh and nonsense. The
sooner these millionaire Protection
understand this, better for
them. If Mr. knows any-
thing he knows that these men do
not represent the sentiment of the
Southern people and that their new
party will have no more follow-
in the South than Belva Lock-
wood's.

A of wealthy gentlemen,

visit to President-elect Harrison
and requested him to appoint good
men to office in South and as-
him of their belief
If he will encourage the
Protective sentiment in the South,
so they say, a new political party
will be which will break
the solid South. These millionaire-

They offer to sell out them-
selves and ask others to join them.
This is not first time that such
propositions have been made. Every
now and then some who wants
notoriety or protection advertises
that the South is ready to sell out
for a few offices. Such men do not
represent sentiment of
of the South, as they always
in election years.
When these ion advocates
in the South talk about starting a
new party it reminds us of the boy

solid necessity. It is as much

so long there is no change in our
