The Health Affairs Library was established in 1969 by Jo Ann Bell, Ph.D. The library's mission was to serve the fledgling School of Health Affairs. In 1980 the name was changed to the Health Sciences Library. In 1993, the library received its current name, the William E. Laupus Health Sciences Library, in honor of the first dean of the four-year School of Medicine. The library began in the old cafeteria building, moved to the Biology Building in 1970, to the Belk Building in 1972, and to the new Brody Building in 1981. In 2006, it moved to the current location, in the new Health Sciences Building.
The William E. Laupus Health Sciences Library connects the education, research, and clinical programs of East Carolina University's Division of Health Sciences, Eastern Area Health Education Center (EAHEC), and health care practitioners in eastern North Carolina with quality health information. The Laupus Library serves the Brody School of Medicine, the College of Nursing, the College of Allied Health Sciences, and the School of Dental Medicine. Library services are also extended to the region's health care providers including those at the ECU Health (previously Vidant Medical Center) in Greenville and ECU Health (previously Vidant Medical Center) system affiliates across eastern North Carolina.
