This photo was taken shortly after the death of Sheriff Duke Andrews, shortly after Ralph Tyson was sworn in as Pitt County Sheriff. Sheriff Andrews had died of natural causes during a stakeout at Red's TV in Farmville. Pitt County Coronor Withers Harvey served as interim sheriff until then Deputy Sheriff Ralph Tyson had been appointed as county sheriff. At age 32, Ralph Tyson was one of North Carolina's youngest sheriffs. He served as our county sheriff until his retirement in December, 1990 -- 25 years as sheriff and 32 years total with the sheriff's office.
