This is called a tobacco plant bed. A farmer would pick the richest land he had and make a frame with boards around it and plant the tobacco seeds in it. A cloth or plastic covering was placed over it to keep the small tobacco plants from freezing. When it was time to put the plants in the fields the plants would be pulled up by hand and carried to the field for transplanting.
