I was a token black for entergration at Snow Hill Junior high in the 8th grade. A token for Greene Central High in the 9th grade the first 9th grade class. Then there for 2 years I had to move to H.B. Suggs which I found out students were taught 2 years behind. I attended the 11th grade only there. But what a great school of teachers with love and joy. My most memorable school year in high school, and excelled in all classes on the A honor roll. Then on to intergration for Farmville Central High School where the entire town meshed both black and white students. What a ride through 8th to 12th. Did nay newspapers catch all this suffereing we did for equality in education. I am writing my own book about BLack History. Keep pushing we have never arrived!!

It's almost time for things to start to happen for us our community and our school. First the alumni is coming in sept-4&5. Then we start the Million Dollar Quest Fund Raiser. Our first affair for that is Nov. 20-2010, it's called the Banquet/Auction Fund Raiser. We have on the program the C.W. Spirituals & a speaker that will enlighten us on a few things, dinner will be served. It's all for a good cause so please show your support to your school, your community in helping us stand together as a people. The only way to do this is to 'STAND'.If you need and want a ticket, please contact me on facebook, right here or when you see me anywhere. I have tickets and I also love to talk about what we are doing for the school and for the community. And we do need your support for we do have a vision of support for our community. Along with what I had put on the other pages about the up and coming events, here are some of the other things planed.To put a new roof on the gym,cafeteria, and kitchen.Modernize the said kitchen,gym, and dinning room. Replace windows and doors, replace heating/air system. Lower ceiling in hallways and classrooms. Replace tile in hallways and all other areas where tile is needed. Moderize all bathrooms, install security system with cameras.Purchase playground equipment & purchase computers for office.So you can see that we are are in need of your help to restore our school.We thank you again for your reading of this matter in hope that it will touch you in someway and you feel the need to help your school!I'll have more for you soon.

I Joe Charles Hopkins Jr is apart of the class of 1963. to me H.B.Suggs hight scool was the best school ever. even in my young years I went to some schools in the north, with all class of people, I mean back in the 50's. BUT THERE WAS NO PLACE like H.B.SUGGS.So this is why I'm writing this piece, for all of those who want to see our school remain the same and grow.      Developing A Relationship  Stop, look,stand still and read, developing a relationship!Let's begin to be a-wear of our life.A LIFE FOR US,for our children,our village,neighborhood and community.Yes to make a-way for our   children through us giving something back to our neighborhood.      We have a school here that need our support and help and in return we help each other.H.B.SUGGS is the school and we the people are who I'm talking about.      It was God's plan from the very beginning for us to keep our school.And if you do the research you will see that we are one of the only schools, if not the only one still standing.'To me that say a-lot! Yes it is in God's plan for us to have our school,for us to come together to provide the means and welfare for a new way, a new people!God is giving us the opportunity to do HIS will, just as HE did for the Israelites. the H.B. Sugg High School has now been turned into a community center (the H.B.Sugg Community Center). the owners are trying really hard to keep the building's doors open. They will be having a meeting every 3rd Thursday in the month with friends, family, graduates of the school to come up with different ideas to help the center. Greetings to all. I am a 1970 graduate of H.B. Sugg. I first went there from 1st through 3rd grades. We moved and I attended what was then known as Bruce Falkand Elementary from 4th through 8th grades; went back to H.B. Sugg and completed my 4 years of high school. There was so much pride there. I will never forget my early childhood teachers, Miss Faison, Ms. Exum and Mrs. Taylor. There are so many memories left down those hallways with the sqeaky wooden floors. Anyone remember the teachers selling fruit in the hallways? You could buy 2 apples for a nickel and 3 oranges for a dime. During my early years, I also remember what a superb band, basketball and football teams we had. And yes Lydia, Maydays. However, academics were most important. During my high school years, Miss Jordan and Mrs. Graham, among others were the academic gurus. I know everyone remember Mr. Selby making us sing the school song over and over,(The Faithful Blue and Gold), until we sang it to his satisfaction. The memories are too numerous to share here. As some of you may know, H.B. Sugg is in danger of being demolished. My classmate and best friend of 40+ years, Carrie Shelley Baker is on a committee to help save this historic site. I also attended H.B. Sugg High School from 1964-1968. I can truely say that I liked all of my teachers. They were caring and supportive. I really like class reunions and keeping in touch with members of my graduating class.

I too attended H.B. Suggs. I was there for my beginning years. That is where I got my foundation for education and I am proud to say so. I have worked in education for 16 years and know the importance of Head Start, Kinder and First Grade. Mrs. Montgomery was my Kindergarten teacher and she left an important positive impression with me. God bless those teachers who truly love their students and want only for them to succeed in life. She cared about the whole person. I still remember celebrating May Day. Anybody else out there ever wrapped the May Pole? A-tisket a-tasketa green and yellow basketI wrote a letter to my love(mom)And on the way I dropped it.

I didn't graduate from H B Sugg, but I spent all of my elementary years there, prior to integration in 1971. I have to say that those were perhaps the best years of my life. I did not know then the importance of going into that school or the classrooms on that last day before integration. When school let out for that final school year, s a 6th grader ging to the 7th grade, I could not have even imagined how our lives would be changed forever. We were about to be a part of history at various levels of our studies. I went on the Jr. High School, which was then known as FARMVILLE JUNIOR HIGH, while my brother, cousins, aunts and uncles went on to the new High School, known as FARMVILLE CENTRAL. As I research the history of the school, little did I know that we would groundbreaking and history-making  for our town, state and for our nation. My sense of awareness and achievement has been heightened as I think of those who went on before us. They made sacrifices so that our paths would be made easier. We made sacrifices so that those who followed us would have an easier path to travel. We did not endure some of the violence associated with integration, but we dealt with equal rights issues, mistreatment, ridicule, and just plain old fear of the unknown. At that time, we didn't realize the importance of the struggle we were in. But today, Feb. 10, 2010, I realize the what an impact it has had on my children, your children, and all children alike. So I ask everyone who was a part of the transistion, a part of the struggle, to take your place in history, however, small you may think your contribution was. It may seem small to you, but it turned out to be a big part in shaping the history of our schools, our town, our state, and the entire nation. To every citizen of the Town of Farmville, to every student who was part of the transition, to every teacher who accepted the responsibility to educate all of us, to every coach who taught us that instead of competing against one another, we can compete together for a commomn cause (not only to win at sports, but to win in the game of life), to the parents who were brave enough to say "yes", this change is for the greater good of our community and convincing the children to embrace that philosophy. I SALUTE ALL OF YOU, and I THANK ALL OF YOU, for the role you played in shaping my life. I'm a better person because I was a part of this. I have a greater understanding of the importance of what was done and why it was done. What a blessing. Wow! My mom attended the same school and graduated in 1966. I was just going through her high school year book this morning. Her birthday is next week and I am trying to get the book restored for her because it has been damaged over the years. I was doing research on the school which I just learned was closed in 1999 and came across your comment on this site. I noticed you graduated in '68 and sure enough when I looked at the pictures of the 10th graders...there's your name! I'm not sure which girl you are in the photo but if ever you wanted to see it, I would be more than happy to scan the photo and send it to you via email. I attended H.B. Sugg High School from 1964-1968. The teachers were very caring and concerned that students mastered their studies. The school was small compared to others which led to an atmosphere of unity among students. My graduating class still celebrate reunions and stay in touch with each other through out the years.
