The primary reasons involve conflict between the surrounding wildlife and people, increased competition due to overpopulation, and a tasty, yet, unhealthy alternative to their natural diets.

N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission explains that "the relationship between regulation development and hunting comes full circle as hunter harvests provide vital data" for deer statewide. This interconnection allows the Commission to gather harvest data collection, biological data collection, and random sample survey data collection, all of which enable proper management and treatment of North Carolina's deer population.
