Emil Briggs, a research scientist in North Carolina State University’s physics department, goes mountain climbing on the weekends with his daughter. Climbing serves as a bonding opportunity and a way to create community. Emil aspires to teach the younger generation proper safety and ethics, and hopes this knowledge will spread.

Dubbed as Nature’s Playground, Burke County, North Carolina offers a variety of activities such as hiking, kayaking, hang gliding, and wine tours. South Mountains State Park provides a backcountry experience for all levels of outdoor enthusiasts. There are also a number of waterfalls and lakes to explore in the area.

Abstract:
Governor Jim Martin proclaimed June as Rivers Month in North Carolina, and the fourth annual celebration of the state’s freshwater rivers and streams. Over fifty river-related events were sponsored by local river groups, parks and recreation offices, and outing clubs throughout the state. Activities included white-water rafting and canoeing, river cleanups, a concert series, festivals, and canoe trips.
