Abstract:
A common form of folk tales in eastern Perquimans, a county located near the coast in northeastern North Carolina, is that of \"tokens of death.\" They are tales and statements of belief concerning both natural and supernatural phenomena which were considered to have been omens, or tokens, of various deaths. These tales are intimately related to the history of Perquimans County and to the course of its economic and cultural development.

Customs surrounding death and burial are considered rites of passage, those rituals observed at a person's passing from one stage of life to another. The people of Franklin County observe a unique set of death and burial customs that include stopping clocks, the bathing of the deceased, and the honoring of certain objects.

An unusual pattern of speech arose on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, namely switching the ‘v’ and ‘w’ sounds at the beginning of words. The authors were given an example of a song that included this phenomenon, “Wictory shall be mine.”
