Bending Sticks: The Sculpture of Patrick Dougherty, is a new documentary film by Penelope Maunsell and Kenny Dalsheimer on North Carolina artist Patrick Dougherty. Dougherty is an internationally known contemporary artist, and the film takes a look into Dougherty's creative process from before the idea stage through the final execution of the work. The film also examines the artist’s life and career which he has spent creating sculptures by interweaving thousands of locally culled tree saplings into giant windblown forms and figures.

The construction of detached backyard cottages has been banned throughout Raleigh for decades, but many people are opposing the regulation over the popularity of tiny houses. A new proposal would allow detached dwellings citywide as long as they are built to code. Critics are afraid it would lead to urban blight and downtown neighborhoods will lose their appeal as people could turn the dwellings into slums.

Abandoned homes, such as 212 E. Geer St. in Durham, are primarily situated in low-income, minority neighborhoods where lending banks aren’t likely to pay for upkeep. This often leads to a crime problem as squatters, prostitutes, and drug dealers use the property for illegal purposes. This affects the neighborhood community as property values decrease and crime increases as banks let the houses fall apart. In Durham, some community groups are acting to try to renovate houses and make the neighbors a safer place.
